Are Sports Star Dieing for Ultimate Glory? | Industry Tap

Dimentia Pugilistica (DP) is a neurodgenerative?dementia?that affects those who have experienced brain injury; athletes include Jack Demsey, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Graziano, Owen Thomas, Muhammad Ali, and Junior Seau to name just a few; similar injuries occur in the military.

Technology and medicine have advanced to the point where identifying Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)?and other sports injuries are laying bare sobering facts that make every sports franchise owner, athlete, and fan think more deeply about the purpose and meaning of sports. Can we really live with and feel good about sports in which our ?heroes? are seriously permanently injured?

A Look at the?Bullfight?and Sports Psychology

If we look at the psychology of sports through the eye of the bullfight in which the bull was traditionally killed the event is like a classic tragedy where adversaries are matched and skill, awareness and strength determine the victor. We know that the Matador has an advantage because of his sword but Matadors have been injured and killed; the bull has a chance. Usually though, the bull is sacrificed at the end of the bullfight so that there is resolution to the conflict; humans would be unsatisfied were this not the case. It would be like the story of Romeo and Juliet ending before the suicide.?Sports psychologists believe fan psychology is rooted in our primitive experience when we lived in small tribes and our best warriors helped protect us for other tribes.

The NFL?s Response to Concerns Over Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)

The NFL and General Electric have just announced a $60 million research project into brain injuries with a purpose of developing new technologies to help protect brains from traumatic injury in sports, the military and the general public. According to GE?s CEO Jeff Immelt the program will bring together the best minds in the world to improve identification, prevention and management of brain injuries.

FB Brain Injury

The NFL is facing a lawsuit by 4,000 former professional football players and their families many of whom have been living with life-altering brain injuries. According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 173,000 brain injuries related to sports or recreation are treated in US emergency rooms each year.In the Army there have been 250,000 brain injuries among members since 2000.

Research will seek to answer the question of why some athletes experience brain injury while others don?t. One example is Mohammed Ali whose Parkinson?s disease is said to be related to his being ?punchdrunk?; George Foreman on the other hand has aged more normally. This brings up the possibility that some people may have genetic markers that make them more susceptible to brain injuries.

Special sea slug poised to make a comeback off California

Mar. 18, 2013 ? After almost four decades of absence from local waters, a special sea slug appears to be making a comeback, and marine scientists at UC Santa Barbara are eagerly anticipating its return.

With its vivid blue and gold colors and its discovery by UC zoologists in 1901, the nudibranch Felimare californiensis, also known as the California chromodorid, has been a favorite species of sea slug for UC marine scientists and students for decades. But while it held a special place in their hearts, it lost its place in local waters, which once included La Jolla, Corona del Mar, Malibu, and Santa Barbara, as well as all but the two westernmost Channel Islands.

"We'll be pretty excited if someone finds the nudibranch in mainland tidepools, after this 35-year hiatus," said Jeff Goddard, project scientist with UCSB's Marine Science Institute. His findings have been published online in a recent edition of the journal Marine Biology.

In the 1970's, the abundant F. californiensis started to disappear from Southern California, and by 1984, was extinct in the region. Its disappearance from the mainland, said Goddard, is unique among the 130 species of sea slugs known to inhabit California waters.

"Its decline is not shared by closely related nudibranchs with similar historical geographic distributions and mode of development," said Goddard, "and is not predicted by warming trends and climate variation over the past 40 years, including the strong El Ni?o events of 1983 and 1998."

In their paper, Goddard and his collaborators conclude that water pollution from the heavily populated and urbanized southern California mainland is the most likely factor, compounded by historical over-collecting of the nudibranch and habitat loss through the development of major ports and marinas. The researchers suspect that degraded water quality, which reached a low point in the Southern California Bight in the 1970's, affected either the slugs' food -- sponges -- or the cyanobacteria that live in a symbiotic relationship with the sponges, especially near the mainland.

However the deep blue slug with the bright gold spots reappeared in 2003 off Santa Catalina Island, and in 2011 the rare and highly sought animal was again spotted off Santa Cruz Island and off the coast of San Diego.

"Since the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, big strides have been made in reducing pollutants in the Southern California Bight, especially from large wastewater outfalls, and these improvements may have allowed Felimare californiensis to regain a foothold in the region," said Goddard.

The current population status of F. californiensis in Southern California remains tenuous, but Goddard is encouraged by its persistence at Catalina in marine protected areas, including the popular, no-take Casino Point State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) and the recently established Blue Cavern SMCA. He and the paper's co-authors, biology professor ?ngel Vald?s from Cal Poly Pomona; CSU Northridge student researcher Craig Hoover; and visiting colleague and sea slug expert Maria Schaefer plan to continue to monitor the population at Catalina, examine changes in genetic variation in the nudibranch since its decline, and study the distribution and abundance of its sponge prey.

Apple's new web page talks up the iPhone as expected, but in reality it's good news for everyone

Apple's new ad

Apple has put up a new web page (and sent out an email blast to spam folders everywhere) praising the iPhone 5 against the competition. Plenty of Android fans are going to debate every single word Apple says until we're all blue in the face, but what I can see is that Apple is finally taking the competition seriously, out in the open, in front of everyone.

When a company wants your attention, they bash the competition. See all of Samsung's ads from last year as an example, or the "I'm a Mac" ads from Apple. Android OEMs are pulling out all the stops and bringing us features we didn't even know could be done in both the hardware side (HTC's new microphones have me excited) and the software side (the way dual-camera video chat looked in the Galaxy S4 Unpacked event has me itching to try it). Apple wants to take your attention away from all this. Ads like the web page they launched today try to do just that.

But getting your attention is easier than keeping it. To do that, Apple will have to ramp up on software changes, and take a few risks that they haven't been taking for a while. That's great news for the face of mobile, regardless of which side of the fence you're on. We all scream "copycat" (and Apple has been quick to call up their lawyers) when one company brings something we've already seen on some level from another. But when one company does something great, the rest do everything they can to do deliver something just as "innovative" (I'm starting to hate that word) of their own. Since we're the ones buying, we all benefit.

Make no mistake -- Apple has some of the best people in the business working on what's next. The worry that phones like the HTC One, the LG Optimus G Pro, and the Samsung Galaxy S4 are going to steal a little more thunder than they have in the past is good for us all.

Tips To Prepare Your Toddler For New Baby | Kerala Latest News ...

A toddler is still too young to understand anything about a sibling. All he knows when he actually sees the baby in mommy?s arms is that his mother is not there for him. You will definitely be well prepared to cater to the needs of both toddler and new baby. Here are some tips to prepare your toddler for new baby.

Tips To Prepare Your Toddler For New Baby are:

1.Take your toddler along with you for the prenatal check-ups. This way she?ll be familiar with the hospital where you?ll deliver.

2.Do not forget that she is still a baby too. Get her something special and offer it as a gift from her new brother or sister. This is an extra step in reassuring her about the love her new sibling offers.

3.Inform your little one about the new baby?s arrival at least 6 months in advance. Explain to her about the new baby?s behaviour such as fussing, crying etc.

4.Leave her with caretakers or grandparents for short durations. This will help when you are at the hospital for a couple of days during delivery and also when you need some extra time off.

5.When the baby bumps start to show, your little one should not get baffled. Allow her to touch your belly, let her feel the baby?s movements.

6.Read her books about babies or siblings caring about babies. If you or your husband have siblings, show her your childhood photos, where you and your siblings are having fun. This way she?ll understand that having a new brother or sister is actually fun.

7.Get a new crib for the baby if your little one still loves to sleep in her old one. Do not expect her to share her things with the baby. At least when the baby first arrives.

8.Take her to relatives or friends who have 2 or more children, so that she sees what a larger family is. Allow her to touch or mingle with children younger than her. Remind her to be very gentle.

9.While decorating the new baby?s room, allow your toddler to help too. Take her help in arranging the crib, selecting baby blankets and pillows. Shop with your child when you are selecting dresses or toys for the newborn. Allow her to pick a few toys. This is one step in creating a bond with the new baby.

10.Finish with toddler essentials such as potty training, weaning from breast-feeding (if she is more that 18 months old) or the feeding bottle.

These are some tips to prepare your toddler for new baby.

Pope Francis: I want 'poor church for the poor'

Spencer Platt / Getty Images

Newly elected Pope Francis gestures after entering Paul VI Hall in the Vatican Saturday as he holds his first audience with the media.

By Claudio Lavanga and Marian Smith, NBC News

VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis said Saturday he wanted "a poor church for the poor" in his first remarks to the media since he was elected leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Wearing simple white robes and plain black shoes, he explained how he decided to name himself after St. Francis of Assisi: When he reached two-thirds of the vote in the conclave, a fellow cardinal embraced him and said, "Don't forget the poor."

"That's when I thought of Francis of Assisi," he said. "And that is how the name came to me: Francis of Assisi, the man of poverty, of peace."

He added: "This is what I want, a poor church for the poor."

His comments underscored previous indications of his preference for austerity -- he did not sit on the papal throne to receive the cardinals after being elected, he took a bus with the rest of the cardinals back to their hotel and he was pictured Friday paying the bill himself.

There were some 5,600 accredited journalists ? including some children and family members ? packed into the Vatican's Paul VI Hall, the UK's Sky News reported.

The 76-year-old pontiff praised reporters?for their coverage of the historic transition of the papacy.

"The role of mass media has become essential in modern times, so thank you...you have worked hard," he said to applause.

Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was set to meet Emeritus Pope Benedict at his retreat south of Rome next week, the Holy See said in a statement. It will be the first time in modern history that a newly elected pope has met his predecessor.

Benedict resigned from the papacy on Feb. 28, the first to do so in 600 years. Francis, an Argentine and the first non-European pope, was elected on Wednesday.

Pope Francis is also expected to meet Argentine President Christina Kirchner next week ahead of his Installation Mass on Tuesday, the Vatican said.

The two have a combative history over issues such as same-sex marriage, which Bergoglio described as "a plan to destroy God's plan." Kirchner, meanwhile, said his remarks were "reminiscent of the times of the Inquisition."

On Friday, the Vatican denied "anti-clerical" accusations that Pope Francis had failed to protect priests during the so-called "dirty war" waged by Argentine dictators more than 30 years ago.

"We have every reason to affirm that these accusations are not reliable and there is no reason for them today to cast a shadow over the new pope," Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said at a briefing.

A second spokesman, Father Tom Rosica said the accusations by an Argentine journalist amounted to a political smear campaign against the new pope.

"They reveal left-wing elements, anti-clerical elements that are used to attack the Church," Rosica said. "They must be firmly and clearly denied."

Bergoglio was not a cardinal, or even a bishop, during the time in question but supervisor of Jesuit priests in Argentina.

NBC News' Alastair Jamieson and Ian Johnston, The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

(AP) ? The road from the military academy where Hugo Chavez's body has been lying in state to the hilltop museum where he'll be displayed indefinitely is lined with some of the most dangerous slums on the planet. It runs under bridges in dire need of repair and past grocery stores with no groceries.

Tens of thousands of Venezuelans gathered along that route Friday to watch the late president's body cross the city in yet another choreographed show designed to keep Chavez supporters in thrall, at least until an April 14 election scheduled to replace him. Then, the banners and sound systems will be put away, and people will have to go on living in the dysfunctional country Chavez has left them.

This tense, relentlessly gray capital embodies many of Venezuela's problems, with crumbling apartment towers and food lines often sharing the same sidewalk with cheering crowds eager to greet their departed Comandante.

"More than anything, the government continues fighting with everyone, and does everything badly," said Francisco Olivero, a 54-year-old carpenter who lives with his wife and five children in the poor neighborhood of Catia, just blocks from the funeral route.

Like many Venezuelans, Olivero said wartime-levels of street violence all over the city were his top worry.

"They kill people here every day," he said. "I've lost friends, relatives."

Even as thousands of bused-in police academy cadets gathered along the route, Olivero and his wife Yelitza Acuna were hiding from the sun while waiting in a block-long line to buy flour, coffee, butter and other food staples that they said have been hard to come by for about two years.

The store, which sat along the most trafficked part of the route, happened to be selling the raregoods that day, drawing a crowd of people desperate for a few bags of flour.

"The word spread in the street, and we all came running here," said Oliver's wife, Yelitza Acuna, a cook's assistant.

Economists say government-imposed price controls designed to dampen inflation topping 20 percent have made it impossible for store owners to sell basic foods at a profit, sparking widespread shortages. For their part, officials have accused suppliers of hoarding the goods and have invaded warehouses looking for sugar, flour and other food items in short supply.

"You can't find anything," said 27-year-old lawyer Anglys Bericote, who rode a bus for four hours from the town of Cajigal to view the funeral cortege. Wearing a heart-shaped "I am Chavez" pin, she said she was taking the opportunity to also stock up on basic goods. People in her town have even had to go without toothpaste and toilet paper, she said.

"It's all the plan of the private businesses," she said, repeating the government's line of attack. "They want to hold onto everything so that it riles up people."

A few blocks from the military museum, where a ceremonial fire awaited the arrival of Chavez's body, Jonathan Rodriguez watched government supporters pass by in red T-shirts bearing Chavez's image. Raw sewage trickled from a broken pipe down the street, and the 37-year-old insurance agent scolded his two sons for playing nearby.

"The majority of them don't complain about the problems here," Rodriguez whispered about the passing Chavez supporters. "It's as if they didn't exist."

Rodriguez said he doesn't have that luxury. Violent crime is so bad in his part of town that he and his family shut themselves inside their home every night by 6 p.m., only opening the?iron gate?covering his front door?the next morning. Yet for Rodriguez, staying indoors might not be enough to protect him and his family from the war outside. Several weeks ago, a stray bullet penetrated the zinc roof of a neighbor's house.

Almost all of Caracas' streets empty of people by dusk as residents live under the pall of a homicide rate 20 times that of the United States. On Thursday, the U.N. Development Programme issued a study finding Venezuela had the world's fourth highest homicide rate, only behind Honduras, El Salvador and the Ivory Coast.

Rodriguez blamed his working-class neighborhood's ills on thugs who prowl the streets on motorcycles and called for more police patrols.

Many, however, believe the police are a big part of the problem. In an astounding revelation, former Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said in 2009 that police were responsible for up to 20 percent of the country's crimes.

"I just stay inside now," Rodriguez said. "Outside, it's not safe."

All along the funeral route are unmistakable signs that this 28 million-person country is not only unsafe, but that its basic services no longer work.

The hills around the military academy are covered with bare-brick slums that rise almost vertically into the Caribbean sky. More Venezuelans have moved into such slums during Chavez's government, casualties of a housing deficit that the human rights group Provea estimates at 2 million units. Official figures show the number of houses deemed "inadequate" in the country grew from 295,000 in 1999 to more than 404,000 in 2011.

The growth of such neighborhoods has contributed to other problems. Due to crumbling or inexistent infrastructure, sewage all over the city goes mainly to one place: the once-pristine Guaire River, which runs along most of Chavez's funeral route.

In 2005, Chavez had famously promised that Venezuelans would one day be able to swim in its waters. Trying to do that Friday would be nothing less than life-threatening.

Retired truck driver Miguel Mosquera said he remembered the idyllic scene there decades ago, when the river was a perfect place to spend a sunny day.

He lives in the neighborhood of San Antonio, close to the river and within sight of the funeral route.

"The city grew too much," the 67-year-old said. "In the '30s and in the '40s, people bathed in this river. ... Here, when it rains, it's chaos, you see that the river sometimes spills over when it rains."

Jose Leal, who had stopped by a bakery near the route, said he had given up on any change under the current government, led by Chavez's hand-picked successor Nicolas Maduro.

"It isn't easy, brother," Leal said as Chavez supporters headed to the river to watch the cortege pass. "It's worrying. It creates stress, stress in the family, stress at work."

Police clash with Sunni worshippers in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Protesters clashed Friday with Iraqi police trying to prevent them from reaching the most venerated Sunni mosque in Baghdad, as members of their sect once again massed for anti-government rallies in several Iraqi cities. Several people were reported injured.

Iraqi security forces had prevented worshippers from holding Friday prayers at the Abu Hanifa mosque last week as well, a development that reflects heightened sectarian tensions nearly a decade after the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Police officials said anti-riot police used batons and water hoses in order to prevent worshippers from crossing a bridge leading to the mosque, which is located in the primarily Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah.

The officials said several worshippers sustained bruises and minor injuries in the skirmishes at the bridge, about 2 kilometers (1 mile) from Abu Hanifa. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Abdul-Rahman al-Azzawi was among of a group of people who tried to cross the 14th of Ramadan bridge when they were met by security forces.

"We were showered with water and the policemen started to beat us," he said. "I do not know the reason behind this savage attack. We were only going to a mosque, not to al-Maliki's office in the Green Zone," referring to the heavily secured quarter in the center of Baghdad where many officials have their offices.

The clashes did not reach the Abu Hanifa mosque itself. The area around the holy site was calm and hundreds of people, including Sunni parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, attended the Friday prayers there.

During the Friday sermon in Abu Hanifa, Sunni cleric Ahmed Haasan al-Taha criticized the restriction of movement imposed on worshippers.

"Several days ago, the authorities promised us that they would provide the people free access to Abu Hanifa, but once again the government officials failed to live to their promises," al-Taha said.

In the western province of Anbar, the heart of the protest movement that began in December, masked men arrived at the site of demonstrations in Fallujah raising the flag used by predominantly Sunni rebels in neighboring Syria.

They also held aloft a homemade black banner flag very similar to that used by al-Qaida's branch in Iraq, suggesting that supporters of the terror group are trying to make their presence felt in the largely peaceful Sunni protests.

The protests in Sunni areas were sparked by the arrest of bodyguards assigned to Finance Minister Rafia al-Issawi in late December. Sunni protesters complain they suffer from discrimination by the Shiite-led government.

Meanwhile, gunmen in the city of Baqouba broke into the house of Khalil Mohammed, a local leader in the Sahwa anti-al-Qaida movement, and killed him along with three of his sons, said police and hospital officials.

Baqouba is 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

The pro-government Sunni militiamen, known as Sahwa group, joined forces with U.S. troops to fight al-Qaida during the Iraq war. Since then, the group has been a target for Sunni insurgents who consider its members to be traitors.

No. 11 K- State beats Texas in Big 12 quarters

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Rodney McGruder scored 24 points and sparked an 11-0 run in the second half, lifting No. 11 Kansas State past Texas 66-49 on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.

An all-conference senior who ranks in the top 10 in 14 of Kansas State's career categories, McGruder also had a team-leading seven rebounds as the second-seeded Wildcats (26-6) whipped the Longhorns for the third time this year.

Julien Lewis scored 13 points and Jonathan Holmes had 10 for Texas (16-17), which trailed almost the entire game.

The Wildcats, who tied No. 7 Kansas for their first regular-season conference title since 1977, will face either No. 14 Oklahoma State or Baylor in the semifinals Friday night.

The Wildcats held a 43-36 lead midway through the second half when McGruder's one-handed floater ignited the run that put the game out of reach. A moment later, the 6-4 senior stole the ball at midcourt, drew a foul and then connected on a 3-pointer over the Longhorns' zone defense. D.J. Johnson followed with a dunk and McGruder added a pair of 3-pointers.

McGruder's 10 field goals tied the school record for a conference tournament game.

Sheldon McClellan and Lewis hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Texas to cut the lead to 58-47, but that was as close as the Longhorns would get.

McGruder stole the ball near the Texas basket in the final minute before the break and hit a 3-pointer for a 34-28 halftime lead. A few seconds earlier, D.J. Johnon had tipped in a miss after Jonathan Holmes' three-point play sliced Kansas State's lead to 29-28.

Longhorns point guard Myck Kabongo, who scored 24 points in Kansas State's 81-69 victory at Texas, had seven assists but was 0 for 5 from the floor and scored only two points. Since returning from a 23-game NCAA suspension, the 6-1 sophomore had led the Longhorns with nearly 16 points a game.

Angel Rodriguez had 13 points and five assists for Kansas State.

The Wildcats, who swept two games against Texas in the regular season, fell behind early but seized the lead when the Longhorns turned the ball over on three straight possessions and left Will Spradling all alone for a 3-pointer.

The Sprint Center Arena, brimming with purple-clad Kansas State fans, erupted in a loud cheer near the end of the game when popular football coach Bill Snyder was shown on the big electronic board sitting in the stands. The cheers became deafening when the always-reserved Snyder, prompted by the public address announcer, kissed his wife on the cheek.

The victory continues what's been a banner sports year for the Wildcats, who produced a Heisman Trophy finalist, conference championships in both football and basketball and garnered Big 12 coach of the year honors for both Snyder and first-year basketball coach Bruce Weber.

The Longhorns closed the game on an 8-0 run, including another bucket by McGruder.

Senate rejects GOP effort to repeal 'Obamacare'

(AP) ? The Democratic-controlled Senate has rejected a Republican effort to attach the repeal of President Barack Obama's health care law to a government spending bill.

The 45-52 vote defeated the effort, which was led by conservatives. They say that when the law is fully in effect, it will jeopardize the nation's fragile economic recovery. But Obama's allies say national health care could help strengthen the economy in part by encouraging health maintenance and prevention. The law has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The Republican sponsors of the repeal knew it would fail Wednesday but said it was important to put senators on the record. Twenty Democratic-held seats and 13 seats held by Republicans will be up for election next year.

Six months after Benghazi, Obama names Libya envoy. Who is Deborah Jones?

The White House said Obama was nominating Deborah Jones, a career diplomat and Middle East expert, as ambassador to Libya. She would replace Christopher Stevens, who was killed in Benghazi.

President Obama nominated a career diplomat and Middle East expert as the next US ambassador to Libya Wednesday, six months after a terrorist attack on the US mission in Benghazi, Libya, that took the life of Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

The White House announced that the president was nominating Deborah Jones, a former ambassador to Kuwait and currently a scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington, to fill the vacancy left at the top of the US Embassy in Tripoli after Ambassador Stevens and three other American officials were killed in the Sept. 11 assault on the Benghazi mission.

If confirmed by the Senate for the Libya post, Ambassador Jones would take on a diplomatic position associated with both a success and perhaps the most searing failing of Mr. Obama?s first-term foreign policy.

Faced with a looming bloodbath of Libyan civilians in Benghazi as forces of Col. Muammar Qaddafi closed in on the eastern opposition stronghold in the spring of 2011, Obama ordered US participation in an international intervention that checked Mr. Qaddafi?s advances in his battle with opposition forces.

By October 2011 the Qaddafi regime was finished, the mercurial leader killed by a mob of opposition fighters.

Less than a year later Benghazi would become a symbol of anti-American sentiment in a roiling Middle East. The shifting forces shaping the ?Arab Spring? became all the more alarming after Stevens, who was first named a special envoy to the Libyan opposition in Benghazi in 201l, was killed in a firebombing of the US?s Benghazi mission a year later.

Stevens was the first US ambassador killed on the job since 1979.

Republicans in Congress launched investigations into the Benghazi debacle both before and after the November presidential election, accusing the White House of covering up the administration?s failure to respond to Stevens? requests for beefed up diplomatic security in Libya.

Asus MX239H

Thin, bezel-free monitors are all the rage these days, and for good reason; they don't take up a lot of room on your desk and they look great. The Asus MX239H is the latest floating screen style monitor to hit the labs. It uses a 23-inch AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) panel that delivers good color quality and nice wide viewing angles. Its grayscale performance is a little disappointing, however, and the function buttons are skittish and unpredictable.

Design and Features
The MX239H uses the same basic cabinet design as the AOC i2757fh. The 23-inch IPS panel has a resolution of 1,920-by-1,080 and resides in a glossy black housing with no bezels on the top and sides save for a 0.03-inch thick sliver of black plastic that holds the panel in place. The brushed metal bottom bezel is just under an inch high and sports an Asus logo in the center. On the right are white labels for the function buttons positioned beneath the bezel. There are seven buttons in all, including the power switch, and they are extremely sensitive and erratic. At times I ended up selecting the wrong options as the menu choices continued to change well after I took my finger off the button.

The eight-pound cabinet is supported by a round base and arm assembly that resembles a sun dial. The base is sturdy and provides 25 degrees of tilt but doesn't allow height, swivel, or pivot adjustments. All I/O ports are outward facing for easy access and include two HDMI ports, a VGA port, an audio input, and a headphone jack. There aren't any USB ports or a webcam on this model but it is equipped with a better than average pair of 3-watt speakers co-developed by Bang & Olufsen.

As with most Asus monitors, including the Asus VG278HE and Asus VS229H-P, the MX239H features Splendid Video Intelligence Technology, which consists of six picture presets (standard, night view, scenery, game, theater, sRGB) that are optimized for specific applications and lighting conditions. It also offers Quick Fit, a template for fitting documents and photos into various paper sizes for printing. Menu options include brightness, contrast, saturation, color temperature, and skin tone settings, as well as aspect ratio, contrast ratio and sharpness controls. There's an Eco mode setting that is supposed to conserve energy but there was no noticeable difference in power consumption while testing this feature.

Performance
The MX239H delivers the rich colors you'd expect from an IPS-based monitor. Red and blue colors matched up nicely with the CIE chromaticity standards but greens were slightly oversaturated. Fortunately, there was no evidence of tinting and skin tones appeared evenly balanced and natural looking.

Grayscale performance was mixed. The panel had no trouble displaying light shades of gray on the DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test but the darkest swatches were compressed and appeared black instead of graduating from dark gray to black. Viewing angle performance, however, was excellent; colors remained true from every angle and there was no loss of luminance when viewed from the top, bottom, and side angles. Small text appeared crisp and well defined.

The MX239H used 28 watts during testing with Eco mode disabled. Oddly, it used 28 watts of power with Eco enabled as well. While not overly power hungry it can't match the energy efficiency of the BenQ GW2450, which required only 18 watts of power while running in Eco mode.

Conclusion
Despite its weak grayscale showing, the Asus MX239H is a capable 23-inch IPS monitor. It offers rich colors and very good off angle viewing performance, and you get a pair of HDMI ports, which is nice if you plan to use the monitor with a gaming console or an external blu-ray player. That said, the funky function buttons are a bit of a nuisance and a more ergonomic stand would be nice. If you're looking for a comparably priced 23-inch IPS monitor with a more robust feature set, the NEC Multisync EA232WMi is your best bet.

COMPARISON TABLE
Compare the Asus MX239H with several other monitors side by side.

(AP) ? The airwaves in Mali's capital fell silent on Tuesday and newspapers didn't print a morning edition in protest over the arrest last week of an editor who published an open letter challenging the salary of the country's coup leader.

Boukary Daou, editor-in-chief of The Republican newspaper, was taken away by agents from Mali's intelligence service on March 6, soon after his newspaper published a letter from an army officer denouncing Capt. Amadou Haya Sanogo's recently-decreed salary of $8,000 per month, an incredibly high salary in the impoverished country. The letter argues that the salary ? as much as 26 times what Sanogo earned before last year's coup ? is in fact an incentive for future coups.

Sanogo seized power a year ago last March. Faced with international sanctions, he was forced to relinquish control just weeks later, but succeeded in negotiating a golden parachute for himself, including the salary of an ex-head of state. Despite officially stepping down, country watchers say Sanogo remains the power behind the throne, as Daou's arrest seven days ago underscores.

The media strike began on Tuesday and "will continue until Boukary Daou is freed," according to a statement from the country's press association.

President Dioncounda Traore defended the decision to arrest Daou and said that if he is innocent, he will be freed. Speaking to reporters during a stop in the capital of neighboring Senegal, Traore said the letter published in The Republican was subversive, and aimed to demoralize the nation's troops at a time of war.

"Mali is in a state of emergency. We all need to remember this. We are in a state of war, and we cannot allow this kind of thing," he said. "If he is guilty, he will need to answer to the courts. If he is not, there's no reason he'll be kept in prison," he added.

Kassim Traore, the president of the Young Journalists' Organization of Mali said that Daou has refused to disclose the identity of the officer, who penned the letter under the name Capt. Toure.

"The security agents demanded that Daou give the name of his source and Daou refused, which is his duty as a journalist," said Traore. "It's because he would not disclose the name of his source that they are still detaining him, which is why the leaders of the Malian press have organized this No Press Day in order to free our colleague," he said.

In the chaos that followed Sanogo's coup last year, a mixture of rebel groups allied with al-Qaida occupied Mali's northern half, plunging the country and the region into crisis. Since January, French troops, helped by Malian soldiers, have been methodically clearing the north. The letter published in The Republican threatened that if Sanogo's salary is not reduced, soldiers deployed in Mali's north will refuse to fight. The average salary of a rank-and-file soldier is just $100 per month, 80 times less than what Sanogo is now earning.

The incendiary letter began: "Mr. President, we have learned that while we are dying in the great desert (in northern Mali), Capt. Sanogo, in return for leading a coup that plunged the country into the current situation, enjoys a salary of 4 million francs ($8,000). And the others in his group, in his clan, who are refusing to come fight are enjoying the same treatment," wrote Capt. Toure. "If this decision (to accord him this salary) is not reversed within the next two weeks, we will cease ... fighting."

A communique read on state television late Monday said Mali's military had not been able to find an officer of that rank with that name, and urged the press "to be more vigilant in the face of the obscure endeavors (of those) seeking to compromise the unity and discipline of our troops in the field." The communique added that "the investigation is in progress by the relevant authorities in order to identify the real author of this fake letter whose aim was to destabilize our army."

Liberal Democrats fear Obama may give away too much on budget

By Rachelle Younglai and Mark Felsenthal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As President Barack Obama tries to improve relations with Congress, it is not only Republicans who are wary of him but also some Democrats, who on Tuesday warned the president not to compromise their liberal principles in return for a budget deal.

At a lunch with Senate Democrats, Obama said it was critically important to work with Republicans in order to reach a "grand bargain" to reduce the country's budget deficit, according to lawmakers.

"Of course some of us responded by saying 'Yes. But what is in that grand bargain?' We don't want to start whacking away at Social Security," Iowa Senator Tom Harkin told reporters after the lunch.

The liberal Democrats are worried Obama wants to use a less generous inflation index to calculate increases in Social Security retirement benefits. The lower index, known as the chained consumer price index, takes into account changes in consumer buying habits and could trim spending, and thus retirees' benefits, by $130 billion over 10 years.

Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont who caucuses with the Democrats, called the lower inflation index a "stupid" idea.

"I think the much better approach is how to bring more revenue into the system," Sanders told Reuters after the lunch. "There are ways to address these problems without cutting benefits. That is the case I made to the president," he said.

When asked how Obama responded to their concerns, Harkin said the president said things were open for negotiation.

Obama's visit to Capitol Hill came as Republican and Democratic lawmakers introduced competing plans to deal with long-term budget deficits. Republicans proposed balancing the budget in 10 years with $4.6 trillion in spending cuts. Democrats proposed trimming deficits by $1.85 trillion over 10 years in part through tax increases on the wealthy.

TOUGH CHOICES

The White House acknowledged Democrats' concerns over federal benefits programs and said on Tuesday Obama has made proposals that include items that are very tough choices for his fellow Democrats to go along with.

Obama's discussion with Senate Democrats was the first in a series of meetings the president has scheduled with lawmakers this week. Obama will meet with Republicans in the House of Representatives on Wednesday and then with Senate Republicans and House Democrats later in the week.

After a combative campaign to prevent deep spending cuts that went into effect March 1, Obama has shifted gears and adopted a less confrontational approach to achieve a deficit reduction package he says must include both spending cuts, reductions to entitlement programs such as Social Security, and greater revenues.

White House aides said the change in tone reflects a desire by the president to move away from crisis-driven bare-knuckles negotiations to a more collegial process that aims at building consensus around a deal over time.

They said Obama switched tactics to try to engage individual lawmakers rather than the Republican leadership, because Republican House Speaker John Boehner had said he would simply not discuss raising revenues.

Obama's aides believe the best move right now is to deal with rank-and-file members. If a consensus can be reached, it might give Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell some political cover from their right wing.

Last week, Obama dined with rank and file Republicans. After that, Senate Democrats were also looking for some "love" from the president, said one Senate Democratic aide.

But although lawmakers from both parties have said Obama's efforts will help improve relations with Congress, Sanders said it was not just about the interactions.

"It is what you are proposing," he said.

Epigenetics mechanism may help explain effects of mom's nutrition on her children's health

Mar. 11, 2013 ? Pioneering studies by U. S. Department of Agriculture-funded research molecular geneticist Robert A. Waterland are helping explain how the foods that soon-to-be-moms eat in the days and weeks around the time of conception -- or what's known as periconceptional nutrition-may affect the way genes function in her children, and her children's health.

In an early study, Waterland and co-investigators examined gene function of 50 healthy children living in rural villages in the West African nation of The Gambia. The study has shaped some of Waterland's current research into the effects of nutrition on what geneticists refer to as epigenetic mechanisms. Those mechanisms can impact, for example, the levels at which an everyday biochemical process, DNA methylation, occurs at regions of certain genes. DNA methylation is essential for cell development and for stabilizing cell function.

In the West Africa study, Waterland and co-researchers found that levels of DNA methylation were higher at regions of five genes in children conceived during the peak rainy season months of August and September, when food would typically have been less available to their mothers.

According to Waterland, two of the five genes in which elevated DNA methylation occurred warrant further study because they are associated with risk of disease. Specifically, the SLITRK1 gene is associated with Tourette's syndrome, and the PAX8 gene is linked to hypothyroidism.

In a scientific article in PLoS Genetics, the researchers attributed the epigenetic variation to dramatic seasonal differences in the kinds and amounts of foods available in the three subsistence-farming villages that were the focus of the study.

Fox mobile apps add TV Everywhere streaming, 24-hour sports network due this fall

Fox updates mobile apps for TV Everywhere streaming, plans 24hour sports network

Fox has been quietly busy over the last few days, unveiling plans for a 24-hour sports network that may be the biggest challenger to ESPN's throne, and adding new features to its mobile apps. Fox Sports 1 is scheduled to launch Saturday August 17th, loaded with content including NASCAR, soccer (Champions League, Europe League and World Cup in 2018 and 2022), weekly UFC fights, college football, college basketball and in 2014, pro baseball. The bad news? According to the LA Times, for Fox Sports 1 to live Speed TV will die this fall, while Fuel TV is expected to be replaced by Fox Sports 2 while Fox Soccer is turned into an entertainment channel. One tweak it will bring is the "double box" commercial format that keeps the game on while ads play, which is expected to be used frequently on the new channel. It will have a suite of studio shows to compete with the sports leader as well, and even a Fox Sports Go "mobile experience" on iOS, Android and the web with live video streaming and news/stats for authenticated subscribers.

Speaking of "authenticated" cable and satellite subscribers, the broadcaster also updated the free Fox Now second screen apps on iOS and Android, adding access to stream full episodes of its TV shows wherever you are -- as long as you have a membership with a participating provider. That list currently consists of Mediacom and Verizon FiOS, but it may grow in the future. The Fox Now apps still have other features, with synced content, Twitter streams and behind the scenes info, so New Girl and Bones fans may still have a reason to check them out.

Toshl: Reorganize Your Financial Life (with little Monster Gnomes ...

It?s that time of the year when taxes are in the air. You?re probably irritated, wondering: where are my receipts? Why didn?t I document my finances better? If this rings true, it might be time to look into some personal finance software. Heather has blogged some reviews of applications that she has used earlier, and today ProfHacker reviews a fun little application called Toshl.

Toshl is a multi-platform app that allows you to keep track of your spending. When you pay for something, you can enter the expense either on its web-based application, or on your mobile phone.?Toshl is multi-platform (iOS, Android, Symbian and the Windows Phone) and syncs smoothly across different devices.

Toshl is a multi-platform financial management app (with cute graphics).

Toshl is a multi-platform financial management app (with cute graphics).

What?s cool:

The Pro (paid) version of Toshl allows you to implement envelope budgeting??electronically. Dave Ramsay calls envelope budgeting ?grandma?s way of handling money,? but it?s really quite useful still for those who prefer to handle their finances electronically. In the original form envelope budgeting, you would divide your take-home salary into literal envelopes set aside for different expenses. In Toshl, you would do this by creating individual budgets for different expenses (your ?envelopes?), and by tagging your expenses with the same budget name. The tags add up in your budget, allowing you to keep track of how much you?ve spent in each ?envelope.? Toshl allows you the option of rolling over leftover funds from one budget into the next month.

Fun visualization tools, example 1.

Fun visualization tools, example 1.

Toshl offers fun visualization tools for you to see where your money is going. You also get the option of having?your expense report emailed to you every month, or to export your data at any time via CSV (and, if you sign up for the Pro account, Excel, PDF and Google Docs.)

Fun visualization tools.

Fun visualization tools, example 2.

Toshl allows you to set up bill reminders.

Toshl allows you to enter expenses in different currencies, and even provides current exchange rates for 34 currencies. This might be helpful if you travel internationally often.

Toshl requires you to enter in your own expenses, which means you don?t need to turn over your secure passwords to services like Mint.com. However, this might be a negative for people who like Mint?s convenience.

Toshl?s interface is clean and intuitive, and the graphics visually appealing and amusing.?(Adorable little monster gnomes with pots of gold? C?mon!)

Your money's in good hands with Toshl

Your money?s in good hands with Toshl

What could be better:

Toshl only allows you to keep track of spending within one account?you can?t sync across two or more separate accounts. A workaround for those who want to link different people?s spending within a household: use the same account.

The free version of Toshl is pretty restricted in what it can do. You can only set one source of income in the free version, and only create one budget?making it impossible to implement the envelope budgeting system. The application itself isn?t exorbitantly priced: it?s $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year.

NB: I paid for my Pro version of Toshl myself, and have not been compensated by the company for the review.

What personal finance applications have you found useful?
