Iran swipe at Web brings angry reply

TEHRAN (AP) ? Iran's cyber monitors often tout their fight against the West's "soft war" of influence through the Web, but trying to block Google's popular Gmail appeared to be a swipe too far.

Complaints piled up ? even from email-starved parliament members ? and forced authorities Sunday to double down on their promises to create a parallel Web universe with Tehran as its center.

The strong backlash and the unspecific pledges for an Iran-centric Internet alternative to the Silicon Valley powers and others highlight the two sides of the Islamic Republic's ongoing battles with the Web. It's spurred another technological mobilization that fits neatly into Iran's self-crafted image as the Muslim world's showcase for science, including sending satellites into orbit, claiming advances in cloning and stem cell research and facing down the West over its nuclear program.

But there also are the hard realities of trying to reinvent the Web. Iran's highly educated and widely tech-savvy population is unlikely to warm quickly to potential clunky homegrown browsers or email services. And then there's the potential political and economic fallout of trying to close the tap on familiar sites such as Gmail.

"Some problems have emerged through the blocking of Gmail," Hussein Garrousi, a member of a parliamentary committee on industry, was quoted Sunday by the independent Aftab-e Yazd daily. What he apparently meant was that many lawmakers were angry and missing their emails.

He said that parliament would summon the minister of telecommunications for questioning if the ministry did not lift the Gmail ban, which was imposed last week in respond to clips on Google-owned YouTube of a film mocking the Prophet Muhammad that set off deadly protests across the Islamic world.

Even many newspapers close to the government complained over the email disruptions. On Saturday, the Asr-e Ertebat weekly reported that Iranians had paid a total of $4.5 million to purchase proxy services to reach blocked sites, including Facebook and YouTube, over the past month.

Iranian authorities ? perhaps recognizing the risks at hand ? decided against taking a symbolic twin shot at Google and cut access to the Web browser in a country with 32 million Internet users among a population of 75 million, according to official statistics.

That would rank online Iran among the world's top 20 in terms of sheer numbers of users, and equivalent to some European countries in per capita Web use at more than 40 percent, according to the private monitoring group Internet World Stats. The World Bank, however, puts Iran's Internet link rate at just 21 percent last year.

The U.S. is among the world's highest at more than 75 percent.

Iran's deputy telecoms minister, Ali Hakim Javadi, told reporters that Iranian authorities were considering lifting the Gmail ban. But he also used the opportunity to again promise development of Iran's domestic alternatives: the Fakhr ("Pride") search engine and the Fajr ("Dawn") email, Aftab-e Yazd reported.

When reporters noted the quality of Gmail services, Javadi quipped: "If there is Mercedes Benz on the street, that doesn't mean everyone drives a Mercedes."

Iran's clerical establishment has long signaled its intent to get citizens off of the international Internet ? which they say promotes Western values ? and onto a "national" and "clean" domestic network. Earlier this year, Iran's police chief, Esmail Ahmadi Moghadam, called Google an "instrument of espionage" rather than a search engine.

But it is unclear whether Iran has the technical capacity to follow through on its ambitious plans, or is willing to risk the economic damage and the social shock waves.

The Internet has steadily become part of Iran's fabric since the first Farsi-language sites developed a decade ago by Canadian-Iranian blogger Hossein Derakshan, who is considered one of the founders of Iran's social media community. Derakshan, however, was detained in 2008 and sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison two years later as the battles heated up between liberals seeking open access to the Web and authorities trying to erect their own version of China's "Great Firewall," the name given to Beijing's extensive filtering and censorship of the Internet.

Sites such as Twitter and Facebook were pillars of the street revolts after the disputed 2009 re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The powerful Revolutionary Guard responded by recruiting and training its own cyber force to patrol the Web and, later, try to defend against virus attacks on nuclear and other sites that Iran has blamed on the West and its allies.

Some Web security experts also have raised the possibility of Iranian hackers being behind some recent high-profile computer attacks, such as disruptions at Saudi Arabia's state oil giant Saudi Aramco and Qatari natural gas producer RasGas earlier this month. Iran has denied any links.

In a video message for Iranian new year in March, President Barack Obama denounced what he called the "electronic curtain" that keeps ordinary Iranians from reaching out to Americans and the West.

A few weeks later, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered the creation of an Internet oversight agency that included top military, security and political figures in the country's boldest attempt yet to control the Internet. The panel is headed by Ahmadinejad and includes powerful figures in the security establishment such as the intelligence chief and the commander of the Revolutionary Guard.

It's not Iran's first attempt to hold off what hardliners call a Western "cultural invasion." The so-called Barbie wars have gone on for more than a decade with periodic raids to confiscate the iconic American dolls from toy stores. Iran also introduced its own dolls ? twins Dara and Sara ? designed to promote traditional values with modest clothing and pro-family values, but it hasn't significantly dented the demand for Barbie dolls.

Shortage of Engineers Is Causing 'Crisis' In Tech Industry
A lack of qualified workers in the tech industry is causing a crisis, says Microsoft. The firm has started lobbying in Washington, calling for a new approach to science, technology, engineering and math teaching at schools, and warning that if changes are not made, the U.S. will lose out to other, better-prepared nations.

5 Tips on Insuring Your Small Business | Time To Startup!

By Jessica Sanders

Your small business, no matter how small, needs to be insured. If not only for you, but the employees that you hire on to make your business grow. From workers compensation to errors and omissions insurance, there are many choices to make. So, instead of choosing the first option you come across in a quick Google search, you want to consider a number of aspects including cost savings and your industry.

Get Industry Specific

Your business is likely at risk for any number of unique, industry specific needs; a contract company may want to invest in general liability however a trucking business will need commercial vehicle insurance. Therefore, to ensure that you are completely covered, you want to be sure you have all the right insurance for both your business, you as a business owner and your hard working employees.

Know the Policies

This seems obvious, right? However, too many business owners shop by price and rely on a good sales person instead of truly understanding what their policy holds. Instead of falling back on your limited insurance knowledge and a great sales pitch, be sure that you know what you?re being told.

  • Hire a professional: If you don?t want to hire an insurance professional, consider utilizing the knowledge of your attorney. With a familiarity of your industry and business, this person will be able to make sure you?re getting what you need.

Save Where You Can

Save is not a word that comes to mind when you think of insurance. From premiums to even higher deductibles, it seems like a necessary expense that comes as one size fits all. However, you have the opportunity to save with the proper precautions.

Professionals at Insweb.com suggest, ?Reduce your loss risk with fire sprinklers, security systems and/or other safety devices. Many of these will lead to insurance discounts.? Check with your insurance provider to see how you already qualify and what other modifications you can make.

Shop Around

Though a number of insurance agencies monopolize this industry, it doesn?t mean the top dogs are the best ones for your business. Thus, it?s important that you look into each and every option. For example, local insurance agencies may be able to negotiate pricing and be more convenient in a time of emergency or financial burden.

Spend More to Spend Less

As a small business, your budget for insurance may be minimal. However, sometimes it?s the case that you can spend more up front to spend less later down the line. With insurance, there are a number of payments to be made, including deductibles and premiums, but these can work together for an overall lower investment.

  • Higher deductible: According to RateAlert.com, ?? The higher your deductibles the lower your insurance premium.? If you don?t have the cash flow to start high, make your way there as the business grows.

Choosing the right business insurance can feel like a daunting task. However, it?s a necessary evil for each and every business, big or small. To be sure you make the right choice for you, your growing business and the employees that work for you, make educated decisions each step of the way.

Locksmiths have always been the ideal people to contact when it comes to improving the basic security of either your residential home or perhaps even for your business. Askewl dot com ? Risk Management With Your Web Business ...

It seems like no matter how many ways you try to make your marketing more effective, you end up overlooking something. If you try too hard to achieve perfection, you?ll end up neglecting some crucial action steps. If you make a mistake, it?s not the end of the world so don?t worry about this too much. If you keep the principles we?ll be discussing in this article in mind, you?ll find it easier to succeed with your business blog.

Some blogs are so thick with advertisements, pop-ups and the like that you can hardly find the articles. You can understand the motivation behind this, but it?s annoying all the same. Remember that for your blog to be successful, you have to make it user friendly for your visitors. So just remember to only use the minimum number of plugins so you avoid a slow loading blog. At the same time, you shouldn?t use too many apps as they can also slow things down. You should have some kind of tracking script in place for analytics and data gathering. The cleaner your blog is, though, the more visitor friendly it will be.

Having a list of tasks you must complete every day is a simple but very helpful method that can be at the foundation of your time management plan. It doesn?t matter if you write it on a bulletin board or have it on a file on your laptop or phone as long as you have it handy. If you have dozens of things to do every day, this list can prevent you from forgetting something important. There are many ways to get distracted, either by other business related tasks or your personal life. There are, however, certain actions that are essential for you to complete every day. One task that is necessary for your business?s future growth is constantly finding new prospects or leads. This means getting steady traffic to your website, which is an ongoing challenge.

Online marketers, probably more than any other type of business owner, tend to find themselves multitasking a great deal of the time. You are drawn to the idea of multiple streams of income, perhaps in several different niches. What this usually does, however, is make it hard for you to give your full concentration on any single project. This is not the way to run a successful business. It?s more efficient to focus on one task at a time. If it is a major project, then work on that in addition to your daily business and marketing tasks. But do some load shedding and give yourself a break and room to focus on something.

Discussing this topic usually takes quite a while, as you can see based upon the length of this article. This article has not even scratched the surface about what can be said. No matter what your goals are, personal issues will always make or break your attempts to succeed with IM, no matter what type of business you set up. When it comes to your Internet business, realize that issues like this are par for the course when searching for online success.

It really is crucial to take things found at satelite direct into mind!

Worm or virus, what's the difference?

Computer terminology can be one of the hardest things to wrap your head around. It?s can all seem like mumbo jumbo, with made-up or adopted words. Some of the more confusing terminology comes from programs and software with harmful intent. Is the program infecting your computer a Trojan horse, worm or malware though? It can be hard to differentiate them sometimes.

Here?s an overview of the most commonly used terms for malicious software.

Malware ? Malware is a portmanteau of malicious and software. When we, or any other IT professional, talks about malware, we are generally speaking about any software that is designed to steal information, disrupt operations or gain access to a computer or network. In tech, and indeed many news articles, malware is used as a general term. It can also be referred to in legal circles as a ?computer contaminant?.

Virus - A virus is a malicious code that is spread from one computer to another. Computer viruses are usually introduced to a system by a user downloading and opening an infected file. They can also be spread by removable hard drives, if an infected file is put onto a drive which is then plugged into a new computer and opened. For malicious software to be labeled as a virus, it has to be spread through human action, usually in the form of the user unknowingly opening an infected file.

Trojan horse ? A Trojan horse takes its name from the Greek story where a wooden horse was used to hide Greek soldiers who secretly entered Troy. In a similar way this computer virus is a program that is disguised as a useful program that when installed will do damage to your system. The severity of a Trojan horse varies from annoying to completely destructive, and while they are malicious, they will not replicate or transfer to other computers. Many modern Trojan horse programs also contain a backdoor (more on that below).

Worm ? Worms are similar to a virus. In fact, many experts consider a worm to be a subclass of virus. Worms, like viruses, spread from computer to computer; the major difference being that worms can spread themselves. Computer worms also have the ability to replicate on a host system and send these copies to other users. The most common way of transmission is through email, or via a company?s network, often causing computers to run slowly while using a ton of bandwidth, ultimately leading to a system crash.

Spyware ? Spyware is a malware program that captures user activity and information without the user?s knowledge or consent. Some can even go so far as to capture every single keystroke a user makes ? this is commonly known as a keylogger. Spyware infects computers either through user deception (i.e., ?You?ve won 1,000,000,000 dollars? ads) or through exploits in programs. Some spyware has been known to redirect users to websites or even change computer settings.

Adware ? The main purpose of adware is to show ads and gain the hacker ad revenue. These ads can be pop-ups, extra banners added to web browsers, or ads shown during the installation of third party software. While generally not a form of malicious software on its own, it can, and often does, come with spyware.

Rootkit ? Rootkits are all about stealth. When installed they hide themselves from detection while allowing an unauthorized user to access and control your computer. Nine times out of ten, the unauthorized user will have full administrative access, which means that if they were malicious enough, they could really do some damage.

Backdoor ? Backdoors are similar to Rootkits, in that they allow an unauthorized user to access your computer. Many Trojan horses install a backdoor for the hacker to access and remotely control your system.

Bug - Some users think that a bug in software is a form of malware, placed there by the developer to ruin the program or a system. In fact, bugs aren?t malware, they are an error or fault in the software?s code. It?s true that hackers have exploited bugs to infect systems, but the bug was the way in, not the malicious software itself.

In the early days of the Internet, viruses were often installed separately from Trojans and worms. With the rising complexity and effectiveness of malware prevention software, hackers have started to blend their attacks together, often using a combination of one or more types of malicious software to infect systems. These combination malware infections are normally complex, but have been incredibly effective.

While malware is usually malicious towards single users, a new form of warfare that utilizes malware has arisen. Cyberwarfare is rumored to have been used by governments and companies to steal information or completely disrupt a countries information networks. While most Cyberwarfare is conducted at the country or conglomerate organization level, it is only a matter of time before small to medium companies are targeted.

Tools like Microsoft?s Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), which is meant to fix bugs in Internet explorer, as well as strong anti-virus measures, timely virus scans and an efficient Internet use policy will go a long way toward preventing malware from infecting your computers. If you?re worried about the security of your computers and network, please give us a shout, we may have a solution for you.

Asian stocks fall as growth pessimism mounts

HONG KONG (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Wednesday after pessimism about global growth prospects sparked Wall Street's worst sell-off in three months.

Charles Plosser, president of the U.S. Federal Reserve's Philadelphia branch, told an audience that the Fed's efforts to support the world's biggest economy would likely fall short of its goals. That soured sentiment and sent Wall Street lower Tuesday.

Global stocks had risen earlier in the month as the Fed and other central banks came up with measures to boost sluggish growth. But optimism stemming from those moves has faded. Central banks had already bathed economies in massive stimulus through low interest rates and bond purchases but the world is still struggling to eke out growth, highlighting the limits of monetary policy.

Tension between China and Japan, which are the world's second and third-biggest economies, have also knocked sentiment because of the risk it will affect trade.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average was down 1.7 percent at 8,932.88 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.9 percent to 20,514.32. South Korea's Kospi shed 0.6 percent to 1,979.74 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.3 percent to 4,360.70. China's Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.6 percent to 2,016.61.

Investors in Hong Kong and mainland China were also staying on the sidelines ahead of major holidays next week, said Jackson Wong, a vice president at Tanrich Securities. Chinese central bank authorities often announce policy changes during holidays.

"Investors are still very cautious and I see further corrections or consolidations ahead," Wong said.

In Tokyo, shares of export-reliant companies were sold on worries about the global economy and the continued strength of the yen. Toyota shed 1.9 percent and Murata Manufacturing Co. plunged 3.1 percent.

Masahiro Yamaguchi, a vice president at Mizuho Securities Co. in Tokyo, said auto and other export issues were getting hurt because of worries about a slowdown in China, as well as the possible negative impact on exports from a simmering territorial dispute with China over tiny islands.

"It's about the China risk," he said. "The monetary policies are likely helping keep the drop in check, but they weren't enough to keep the rise going."

Political uncertainty in Japan was also adding to the cautious mood. The main opposition party is choosing a new chief later in the day. The candidates have more assertive policies than the administration in power, which could further deteriorate relations with China. The ruling party is expected to suffer a serious setback in the next parliamentary elections because of an unpopular tax increase.

On Wall Street, the Standard & Poor's 500 lost 15.30 points, its fourth straight decline, to close at 1,441.59. The 1.05 percent drop was the worst for the S&P since June 25. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 101.37 points to close at 13,457.55.

In currency trading, the dollar fell to 77.73 yen from 77.70 yen late Tuesday. The euro fell to $1.2870 from $1.2898.

Benchmark crude was down 54 cents at $90.83 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Fight over canola pits biofuels vs. organics

SALEM, Ore. (AP) ? Oregon's Willamette Valley is off limits to canola crops, to protect farmers growing seeds for organic vegetables from having their crops contaminated by canola pollen, pests and diseases.

But demand for renewable energy has helped fuel a push to start farming canola, which can be pressed to extract oil for food or renewable energy. A proposal to loosen the canola ban has raised a tense conflict between producers of organic foods and renewable energy in a state that cherishes both.

Farmers who grow seeds for broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and a variety of other vegetables known as brassicas fear that expanded canola production would destroy their industry by bringing new pests and diseases.

Canola proponents insist all brassicas can coexist if they're carefully managed.

Family Searches For Answers After Finding Mother Dying In A Ditch ...

WINCHESTER (CBSLA.com) ? Flowers were placed on the side of a Riverside County road Tuesday to honor a 68-year-old woman who was left there to die last week.

Wanda McGlover was on her daily morning walk Friday when she was fatally struck by a driver.

?It all doesn?t add up, how it started,? said her son, who asked that his name not be revealed.

?Everybody left the scene and left her in a ditch?bleeding?hurting,? McGlover?s son said.

At the time she was hit, McGlover was talking on her cellphone to her daughter; she said she heard her mother say, ?Excuse me?? followed by screaming and a scuffling sound in the background.

McGlover?s daughter called her brother, who lived with their mother. He traced his mother?s walking path and found her lying in a ditch. Her cell phone was missing.

?She was trying to breath and I held her hand,? her son said.

Paramedics took McGlover to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

McGlover?s passing comes just one month after she was behind the wheel in a deadly collision on Interstate 215 in August.

McGlover was driving her SUV when she hit and killed a pedestrian.

The CHP reported the pedestrian jumped in front of her path, possibly to commit suicide.

?I really hope there is not a correlation to that. It never really crossed my mind,? her son said.

The CHP is investigating McGlover?s death as a possible hit and run.

And her son believes someone knows what happened.

?Please turn yourself in, because you cannot get to where she is right now with this on your conscience,? McGlover?s son said.

How Make Your Living Room Into A Coffee Shop | Olger Fallas ...

I love coffee shops. I find them very ?metropolitan? and they always have a great modern-yet-relaxing vibe which I find very conducive to work and to relaxation. As business becomes more and more ?on the go? thanks to the internet, I foresee a time eventually when the majority of business is done from home and everyone spends their time relaxing and chatting in coffee shops while they design/write/manager their various projects.

It?s the d?cor in a lot of coffee shops that makes them so appealing, so why not see if you can bring that same sense of modern style to your own rooms? Here we will look at how to effectively turn your living room into a coffee shop where you and your friends can hang out and relax.

Stylish Furniture: First of all you are going to want to include some stylish furniture. This is something that sets a lot of coffee shops apart and you?ll notice that they feature bright red and yellow chairs often, bean bags and other furniture that looks quirky and bright. Think about how you can accomplish something similar with seats that are comfortable while at the same time looking modern and more interesting than just your average living room suit. For instance a chaise lounge is very modern and cool, while a colored beanbags are always in fashion and great for relaxing.

Think About Sociability: ?Coffee shop culture? revolves around the apparent culture of coffee shops where people meet each other and get chatting. I think I spoke to about three people in the decades I?ve been coming regularly to coffee shops, but that said I do often come here to hang out with my existing friends. Organize the furniture in your living room then with sociability in mind ? in other words don?t face everything towards the TV, but rather face it towards each other and gather it around tables so that people can see each other when they chat. Meanwhile try to provide a range of different types of furniture so that people in different groups can find ?their? seats and you and recreate Friends in your front room.

Coffee Tables: After chairs and mugs there are more coffee tables in your average coffee shop than anything else. This provides a great focus for the seating areas and gives you somewhere to sit your drinks while you talk or to rest your laptop while you work.

Stations: Another thing that is visually very strong when you walk into a coffee shop is the way in which the seating is segregated and people cluster in little bunches around the room. If you want to create a coffee shop vibe then this is one of the things you need to imitate and so it?s a good idea to think of your seating as a series of smaller areas rather than just one large one. This is also great for parties as it allows groups to huddle as clusters.

Food and Drink: Of course to really create a great coffee shop vibe where people can relax you need to be able to offer the coffee or some other kind of food and drink. Having an open plan kitchen is a fantastic way to accomplish this to begin with, and this way you can stand and chat to your guests while they enjoy a hot beverage. Make sure you also have a coffee machine meanwhile so that you can actually make those beverages.

Tried And True Weight Loss Tips For You

TIP! Fight your cravings. Don?t eat out of boredom and don?t cave into any other bad cravings you might get throughout the day.

If you have tried losing weight before, you know how frustrating and hard it can be. Frustration can set in when efforts yield few results. This article can help you find a way to lose weight and keep you encouraged!

TIP! Reduce the amount of condiments, such as ketchup and mustard, you use with your foods. Each condiment you add should be seen as calories poured directly on your food.

For beginners of weight loss plans, it?s important to take things slowly. Start by eliminating one of your unhealthy habits, and slowly eliminate more over time. Eliminating all temptations simultaneously can be hazardous.

TIP! If you?re working full-time, pack healthy snacks for work. This can be one of the most important decisions you make if you have to work a lot of hours so that you do not binge when you finally get home.

Complement your dieting efforts by constantly recording what you eat. Studies have shown that people who diet and keep a journal of everything they consume are more likely to continue to lose weight. People who keep track of what they eat lose twice as much weight as people who do not.

TIP! Instead of lying down or sitting while on the phone, turn this time into a mini workout. Move around and talk instead of sitting.

In order to lose weight a lot easier, try to use smaller dishes. There is a natural inclination to fill your plate, but dish sizes and portion sizes have increased, which makes it harder to judge the size of the serving you should have. If you use a salad plate for your main course, this can help reduce the food that you consume.

TIP! You need to watch how many calories you consume in order to lose weight. It you?re consuming more calories that you?re burning, you?ll have trouble losing weight.

You can work on your belly by flattening it while seated. You can strengthen your muscles by flattening your abdomen and sitting upright. As you breathe, suck in your belly button as much as you possibly can, moving it closer to your spine.

TIP! Green tea can be a great aid to your diet by cleaning out your system and helping you burn more fat. Many experts consider fresh-brewed green tea to be among the healthiest beverages you can drink next to water.

It is not hard to lose the weight. The first decision you should make is to cut out certain foods. Try getting rid of soda and your usual beverages and replace them with water. Sometimes, juices low in sugar are alright to consume, but sodas and soft drinks should not be consumed at all.

TIP! A vacation does not mean a free pass to eat what you want. Save your money by using your own snacks and low-calorie meals.

If you are curious about how many calories you burn walking around on an average day, buy a pedometer. The general rule is to strive for about 10,000 daily steps. By knowing how many steps you average, you can set goals to increase this number. Every little step is a step in the right direction.

TIP! If you want to help your children lose weight, make sure they get enough sleep. A child?s body grows mainly when they sleep and burns lots of calories at this time.

Losing weight is achievable, and something anyone can do, no matter what kind of life they lead. By effectively utilizing some of the strategies listed here, you can achieve your goal of losing weight. What is holding you back? Begin today!

You can skip to the end and leave a response. Pinging is currently not allowed.

(AP) ? Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan warned Monday that more Americans could be put at risk overseas by the Obama's administration plan to halt production of tanks in Ohio for several years.

The White House has proposed suspending production at the nation's only tank manufacturing plant because the Pentagon says it will soon have enough tanks. Some members of Congress are attempting to restore funding for the tanks and other military weapons in a defense spending bill, a move the White House has threatened to veto.

About 800 workers refurbish the Abrams tanks in Lima, about 80 miles south of Toledo. Republicans in the state have been highly critical of plans affecting the plant and say they won't save the government money.

General Dynamics Corp.'s land systems unit, which operates the government-owned plant, estimates that the cost of shutting down the plant and then restarting it would be $1.6 billion while keeping it open with minimal production over four years would cost $1.4 billion. The Army puts the price of pausing production much lower ? around $400 million.

"We need peace through strength," Ryan told supporters during a rally in Lima. "We need a strong military."

Libyan army gives rogue militias ultimatum after two disband

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya's army on Sunday ordered rogue armed groups in and around the capital to leave state and military premises in Tripoli or be ejected by force, apparently seeking to capitalise on the withdrawal of militias from Benghazi and Derna.

The two main Islamist militias in Derna, a town in eastern Libya known as an Islamist stronghold, said on Saturday that they were disbanding in the town, a day after one of them, Ansar al-Sharia, was driven out of Libya's second city, Benghazi.

The many militias, most of them ex-rebels, that control Libya's streets more than a year after Muammar Gaddafi was toppled are the clearest sign of the weakness of a central government that has been unable to control them and, worse, relies on many of them to provide security.

However, the killing of four Americans including the ambassador in an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 11 seems to have given the nascent democratic government a cue to rally support and channel public frustration with the armed groups.

Some U.S. officials have accused the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia militia of involvement in the attack, a charge it denies.

Ansar al-Sharia, opposed to democracy, is one of the groups that have operated outside the nominal Defence Ministry umbrella that covers ex-rebels approved - and needed - by the government.

"The army chief Yussef al-Mangoush and (national assembly leader) Mohammed Magarief have ordered all illegitimate militias should be removed from compounds and hand over their weapons to the national army," said Adel Othman al-Barasi, a spokesman for the Defence Ministry.

"A committee made up by the military police has been formed to take over the compounds and the weapons and hand these over to the army."

He said the army had already evicted a militia from a military complex on the highway leading to Tripoli airport on Sunday, and that all such handovers had been done "peacefully".

The state news agency LANA said the army had given rogue militias 48 hours to vacate military or state properties, threatening force if they did not comply, though Barasi said they should start moving out "immediately".

Similar edicts have come and gone in the past, with little or no effect on the militias, but the growing frustration of the public may be tipping the balance at street level.

"BACK TO NORMAL LIVES"

"The civil society groups came to our camps, and the youth demonstrators asked us to evacuate the place and disband," Slim Derby, leader of the Abu Slim Martyrs brigade, which is based in Derna, told Reuters by telephone.

"So we disbanded in accordance with their request, because our responsibility is the security of the city. Our members have their own normal lives, so everyone will go back to their normal lives and their regular jobs."

Ansar al-Sharia made a similar announcement in Derna after protesters forced its Benghazi brigade out of its bases in that city on Friday following a mass demonstration in support of democracy and against Islamist militias.

Those invasions met little resistance and appeared to be part of a sweep of militia bases by police, army and activists.

Siraj Shennib, a 29-year-old linguistics professor, said protesters had been maintaining a vigil against the militias in Derna for 10 days, and the protests became much larger after a car-jacking three days ago.

"The people started coming because it has reached the limit. They are saying: we've had enough," he said. "It was a very peaceful operation. We are happy and we appreciate the effort the militias have done to save people from conflict."

Libyan political scientist Ahmad al-Atrash told Reuters: "People in Benghazi and all over Libya want to get these militias under control ... The overwhelming feeling is against any element that keeps the situation unstable."

Derna, which overlooks the Mediterranean, is known across the region as a major recruitment centre for fighters who joined the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria.

Unlike most of the Libyan militias, which were formed for last year's civil war, the Derna groups, especially the Abu Slim Martyrs, are veteran guerrilla fighters with many years of history fighting Gaddafi in the hills of eastern Libya.

The group is named after the Tripoli prison where Gaddafi's jailers killed around 1,200 prisoners in 1996.

MANAGING THE MILITIAS

Unable to handle security without the help of the militias, some of which still have heavy weapons commandeered from Gaddafi's army, the government has until now opted to manage the problem by co-opting those that espouse democracy.

But its aim is gradually to increase its control and integrate the ex-rebels into regular security forces.

The head of Libya's national congress, Mohammed Magarief, met government and security officials in Benghazi late on Saturday and then announced the formation of a "security operations room".

He said this would bring together the army and interior ministry forces with Defence Ministry brigades made up of former rebels and work to secure Benghazi.

He announced plans to dissolve militias not under government control, and said the government wanted the army to take control of the pro-government militias' compounds as a step towards integrating them into regular forces.

A doctor in a hospital where Ansar al-Sharia had provided security for the past six weeks said it had prevented anarchy.

"I don't know about their religion or ideology, but they solved problems," said Abdulmonin Salim. "I don't care if they come from another planet. I want a secure hospital."

Other problems associated with the militias were dramatically illustrated on Friday when the protesters who had pushed Ansar al-Sharia out of its bases moved on to another compound believing that it, too, harboured an Islamist militia.

It turned out to be the base of the powerful pro-government Rafallah al-Sahati militia, which opened fire in an attempt to protect a large weapons store that it had been asked to guard.

Eleven people were killed and more than 60 injured before the militia pulled back and left the arsenal to be looted.

Nasser Abdelhaaq, a Rafallah al-Sahati commander, suggested the crowd had been manipulated to turn on Rafallah al-Sahati, an officially approved militia that also has Islamist leanings.

Six of the dead were bodyguards of a colonel in the regular Libyan army who went missing on Friday, suggesting a kidnapping that may have been the work of a militia group.

Oracle pay for CEO Ellison jumps to $96 million

Larry Ellison, the founder and CEO of Oracle Corp. and one of the wealthiest people in the world, saw his pay jump to $96.2 million last year.

The pay, disclosed in a corporate filing, was up 24 percent from the previous year's total of $77.6 million. Most of Ellison's pay came from stock options that were valued at $90.7 million when they were granted in June 2011.

Those options, to buy 7 million shares at $32.43 a share, have value only if the stock is trading above that price. The options have been under water for most of the time since they were granted. But on Friday, Oracle stock rose 21 cents to close at $32.47.

The company cut Ellison's performance-based bonus to $3.9 million, down from $13.3 million a year earlier. Other senior executives endured similar cuts. That was because Oracle's profit growth for the year came in below its goals, according to the yearly filing it made Friday.

Oracle's net income rose 17 percent to $9.98 billion for the year that ended May 31. Revenue rose 4 percent to $37.12 billion.

The company said compensation was $51.7 million for both Safra A. Catz, its president and chief financial officer, and Mark Hurd, its president. Nearly all their pay was also in stock options that had little value as of Friday.

Oracle said its compensation committee recognizes that Ellison, 68, already "has a significant equity interest in Oracle, but believes he should still be eligible for an annual compensation package because of his active and vital role in our operations, strategy and growth."

Ellison's salary was only $1 for the year that ended May 31, 2012, unchanged from the previous year.

Forbes this week estimated Ellison's net worth at $41 billion. That ranked him as the sixth-richest person in the world and the third-richest in the United States, behind Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and investor Warren Buffett, head of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

The Associated Press' calculation isolates the value the company's board placed on the executive's total compensation package in the last fiscal year. It includes salary, bonus, performance-related bonuses, perks, above-market returns on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted.

The calculation doesn't include changes in the present value of pension benefits. And they sometimes differ from the totals that companies list in the summary compensation table of proxy statements filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The statements to the SEC reflect accounting charges taken for the executive's compensation in the previous fiscal year.

The Bard's Tale brings medieval debauchery to Android

Android Central

The Bard's Tale has found its way to Android today, and is available in Google Play and soon in the NVIDIA Tegra Zone for  $5.99.

The action RPG provides 20 to 30 hours of gameplay, which drags a nameless rogue to unwillingly defend mankind against nefarious evils. He has a hard time getting there, but thanks to the occasional incentives of coin and cleavage, plus back-up from creatures summoned through song, he seems to get by.

If you're sitting on the fence about this one, we're working on a review which will be up real soon. From what I've played so far, the dialog is hilarious and sells the game pretty much on its own. Anybody play the original game on PC or console? How about the old Interplay version from 1985 (which, by the way, is bundled with the game)?

Teens sentenced in sex assault-Twitter case

18 hrs.

(AP)?LOUISVILLE, Ky.?-?A judge has sentenced two teenage boys to community service and sex offender treatment as part of a plea deal in a sexual assault case where the victim publicized their names on Twitter.

Savannah Dietrich posted the boys' names on Twitter because she was frustrated with the initial plea deal in June. She did so despite a judge's order not to talk about the case.

The judge altered the deal slightly Friday, saying the boys may seek to have the sexual assault charges reduced when they are 21. The previous agreement expunged their record automatically before they turned 20.

Dietrich says she is satisfied with the new deal but doubts her attackers understand the impact of their actions.

The boys, then 16 years old, assaulted Dietrich in August 2011.

Why I didn't pre-order an iPhone 5 after all

I?ve had my trusty iPhone 3s for years, since my wife surprised me with it one Christmas. I love the thing. I didn?t think anything would replace my old cigarette-pack sized iPod brick, but it did. It has my calendars, all my music from opera to bluegrass, my sailing and navigation software, tuning and other apps for my guitar, my interactive star chart, backcountry maps for wilderness hiking, yada, yada. I can?t imagine a day without it.

But face it. It?s old, it?s creaky. It?s full to the gills. It doesn?t hold a charge the way it used to. It?s ready to be consigned to the bin where grandma?s rotary phone lives.

My goal was to make it to today ? the day I could pre-order a sparkling new iPhone 5, which would surely have features and gizmos that would make me smile like the day I opened that Christmas present years ago.

But, sadly, it?s not to be.

Why? Because Apple pulled a fast one on me.

I have all kinds of devices that I plug my phone into ? the car, my beloved boat, the outlet in the kitchen that lets me pipe music where I want it, the music player I take on trips, the gadget that lets me play movies rented from iTunes on my TV, the chargers strategically placed where I need them occasionally. There's more, but it's getting embarrassing listing them.

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), in its overbearing wisdom, has decided I don?t need any of those anymore, except for the iPhone/iPad/iTouch/i-everything-else devices that also populate my house.

No. For my iPhone 5, I need a new whole set of everything to plug into it because Apple has decided the venerable 20-pin plug was pass?.

Well, hmmm. I?m not sure this is what Apple had in mind, but it gets me wondering if I really need a new iPhone 5.

Morsi says embassies in Egypt will be protected

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi condemned the attack on Libya that killed the American ambassador and vowed Thursday to protect foreign embassies in Cairo, where police were using tear gas to disperse protesters at the U.S. mission.

American missions have been attacked in three Arab nations? Yemen, Egypt and Libya. The spreading violence comes as outrage grows over an obscure movie made in the United States called "Innocence of Muslims" that mocked Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

Speaking during a visit to the European Union in Brussels, Morsi said he had spoken to President Barack Obama and condemned "in the clearest terms" the Tuesday attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that killed the ambassador and three other Americans.

He also harshly criticized the movie, which came to attention in Egypt after its trailer was dubbed into Arabic and posted on YouTube.

"We condemn strongly ... all those who launch such provocations and who stand behind that hatred," Morsi said, adding that he had asked Obama "to put an end to such behavior."

"But at the same time we say this cannot be taken as a justification for attacking embassies or consulates," he said. "The Egyptian state is responsible for protecting embassies and consulates, and the Egyptian people will not engage in these ... unlawful acts."

Crowds protesting at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo the same day as the Benghazi attack climbed its walls and tore down an American flag, which they replaced briefly with a black, Islamist flag. The protests continued Thursday, with protesters clashing with police near the U.S. mission.

Protesters in Yemen, meanwhile, stormed the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa.

Officials were investigating whether the Libya rampage was a backlash to the video or a plot to coincide with the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Morsi met with EU President Herman Van Rompuy, executive commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso, and foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton.

During a joint press conference, Barroso said the EU is prepared to make available ?500 million ($645 million) in financial assistance to Egypt to support the consolidation of democracy.

The EU is Egypt's largest trade partner and largest source of foreign investment. The two sides agreed that a joint EU-Egypt task force would meet later this year to further economic cooperation.

The EU already has made available ?449 million to Egypt for 2011-2013, Barroso said.

Morsi, who is hoping to carry out structural reforms to overhaul Egypt's ailing economy, is seeking a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, but more could be required.

The two men also urged Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down in order to end the escalating civil war in that country.

"We are also adamant that Assad should go," Barroso said. "We need a transition to an inclusive democracy."

Morsi interrupted to add that this was "completely agreed upon."
