NCAA rejects claims in concussion lawsuit

CHICAGO (AP) ? Rejecting claims made in a lawsuit concerning concussions, the NCAA said Saturday it has taken steps to protect student athletes from head injuries and that player safety is among the college sports association's core principles.

Attorneys suing the NCAA over its handling of head injuries asked a federal judge Friday to let them expand the lawsuit to include thousands of plaintiffs nationwide. The motion seeking class-action status was filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, where the original lawsuit was filed in 2011 on behalf of former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington and several other former athletes.

"Student-athlete safety is one of the NCAA's foundational principles," said spokeswoman Stacey Osburn. "The NCAA has been at the forefront of safety issues throughout its existence."

She said the association has addressed the issue of head injuries through a combination of playing rules, equipment requirements and medical practices. The NCAA does not believe the legal action is appropriate, Osburn said.

Concussions have become a major concern in sports in recent years. The NFL, NHL and college football, among others, have implemented stricter rules on hits to the head and player safety. The NFL is involved in a lawsuit involving more than 4,000 former players seeking millions of dollars for problems they blame on head injuries suffered during their careers.

Attached to the class-action request from those suing the NCAA is a report for the plaintiffs by a leading authority on concussions, Robert Cantu, who cites an internal NCAA survey from 2010. He said the NCAA found that nearly half of the college trainers who responded to the survey indicated they put athletes showing signs of a concussion back into the same game.

"It is well settled in the scientific community that an athlete must never be returned to play on the same day after a concussion diagnosis," said Cantu, who is medical director of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The plaintiffs say the NCAA was lax in establishing a clear policy about dealing with concussions, leaving key decisions to individual schools or leagues.

Arrington contends he suffered "numerous and repeated concussions" at Eastern Illinois. He is seeking unspecified monetary damages and changes in policy, including the establishment of a long-term medical monitoring program for injured athletes and new concussion guidelines for schools and coaches.

The NCAA said it has taken recent steps to increase awareness of how to treat possible head injuries, from legislation and outreach efforts to new rules on the playing field. On Friday, the NCAA said it was awarding a $399,999 grant to fund a study into the long-term effects of head injuries in college sports.

Sark School and Community Centre to be fitted with solar energy panels

SOLAR energy panels can now be fitted on the roof of the Sark School and Community Centre.

The Development Control Committee has passed an Island Hall Trustees application for photovoltaic cells to be installed on the south-east and south-west of the building.

Trustee Brian Garrard said the group could now get on with planning the project in more detail.

It is hoped the panels would help save money spent on electricity.

?We had a meeting and discussed this possible option,? he said.

?The Island Hall has a huge roof and it seemed like a good idea to make use of the opportunity.

?We had to wait for planning permission and that was approved by the committee last week.

?The prime consideration was the reduced cost.

?The price of electricity on Sark is very high and this would dramatically reduce this cost.?

He said the project was still in its infancy and the trustees would have to meet again to discuss how they would take it forward.

?We can?t tell yet how much it is going to cost,? said Mr Garrard.

?The Island Hall Trustees will be paying for it but it might be that it is self-financing.?

Kurdish-Islamist fighting spreads to Syrian oil fields

    BEIRUT/ANKARA | Thu Jul 18, 2013 10:40am EDT

BEIRUT/ANKARA (Reuters) - Kurdish fighters have seized control of a Syrian town on the border with Turkey and are battling Islamist rebel groups linked to al Qaeda for control of oilfields in the northeast of the country.

The fighting is further evidence that the conflict between rebels and President Bashar al-Assad's forces that has engulfed Syria since early 2011 has splintered into turf wars that have little to do with ousting him.

In southern Syria, attacks by rebels on gas and fuel pipelines that supply power stations caused widespread electricity outages, Syria's official news agency said.

Across the border in Jordan, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry visited a refugee camp and was told by angry Syrians that the United States should set up a no-fly zone and safe havens in Syria to protect them.

The capture of Ras al-Ain by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), a Syrian Kurdish party with links to Kurdish militants in Turkey, rang alarm bells in Ankara.

The Turkish government fears the emergence of an autonomous Kurdish region in Syria could embolden home-grown militants of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is fighting for autonomy in Turkey.

In a statement late on Wednesday, the Turkish military said Ras al-Ain had fallen under the control of the PYD, which it described as a "separatist terrorist organization". Fighting in the town had now stopped.

Turkish troops had shot at PYD fighters in Syria after two rocket-propelled grenades fired from Syria struck a border post on the Turkish side of the frontier.

It was the second time in as many days the military has answered in kind after several stray bullets from Syria struck the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar on Tuesday. The military has now strengthened security along that part of the border.

    FIGHTING SPREADS

Clashes in Ras al-Ain between Kurdish militias, who broadly support an autonomous Kurdish region, and Islamist fighters of the Nusra Front broke out on Tuesday after Nusra fighters attacked a Kurdish patrol and captured a gunman, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Observatory, a pro-opposition monitoring group, said fighting had now spread deeper into the largely Kurdish province of Hassakeh and battles were raging around the Rumeilan oil field, about 200 km (125 miles) east of Ras al-Ain.

The field had mostly been shut down, opposition activists said, but a few of its pipelines may still be supplying refineries in the government-held cities of Homs and Baniyas.

Since March 2011, when the uprising against Assad began, Syria's overall oil production has fallen by nearly 60 percent to 153,000 barrels per day last October, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates.

The Observatory said at least 29 people had been killed since fighting between Islamists and Kurds erupted on Tuesday.

Kurdish units have seized an oil field area called Suwaidiya 20 and there are clashes in Suwaidiya oil region 3, according to the Observatory.

It said the Nusra Front and others al Qaeda-linked fighters were shelling Ras al-Ain from nearby positions

"Part of the reason for the spread is just anger at the Kurdish consolidation of control in Ras al-Ain, it's like revenge and punishment," said one activist who works with the rebels and who asked not to be named.

    GROWING STRUGGLE

"But I also believe there this is part of a growing struggle for control of oil and gas in the region and the rebels are using this as an opportunity."

Nawaf Khalil, a spokesman for the Kurdish PYD, said the Kurds would fight back to maintain the autonomous zone they had set up in the area.

"We fought hard to drive out the repressive regime and its army and we liberated the area from oppression. We will not allow either regime control or these al Qaeda-linked groups.

"What is pushing them to fight us is their antagonism against our autonomous rule in Kurdish areas. I believe their other goal is Rumeilan because it is an important oil resource."

The fighting indicated the collapse of a deal, negotiated by prominent Syrian opposition leader Michel Kilo, under which both sides in the area had cooperated peacefully for months.

Visiting a camp that holds 115,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan near the Syrian border, Kerry heard refugees vent their anger at the world's failure to end a war that has claimed more than 90,000 lives.

He told them Washington was considering various options, including buffer zones for their protection, but that the situation was complex and much was still under consideration.

"What are you waiting for?" a Syrian woman, who did not give her name, asked Kerry at the United Nations' Zaatari refugee camp. "At least impose a no-fly zone or an embargo."

In London, sources told Reuters that Britain had abandoned plans to arm the rebels and now believed Assad might survive in office for years.

The sources also said a peace conference to try to end the conflict might not happen until next year if at all.

"Britain is clearly not going to arm the rebels in any way, shape or form," said one source.

The reason for the shift was the largely hostile public opinion and fears that any weapons supplied could fall into the hands of Islamists.

"It will train them, give them tactical advice and intelligence, teach them command and control. But public opinion, like it or not, is against intervention," the source said.

In southern Syria, the Observatory reported heavy shelling in the Damascus countryside. There were also further shelling of the city of Homs, where fighting has raged for the past three weeks. Clashes erupted in the towns of Deraa and Quneitra in southern Syria, the Observatory said.

NBC's Mitchell Spews Abortion Propaganda in Friendly Chat With Planned Parenthood President

In a softball exchange with Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards on her Wednesday 1 p.m. ET hour MSNBC show, host Andrea Mitchell recited one liberal talking point after another to denigrate pro-life legislation in states across the country: "On Friday, Texas became the 16th state to tighten regulations on abortion clinics in the past three years, effectively putting most of them out of business. This is part of a growing movement by states to restrict access to family planning and other women's health facilities." [Listen to the audio or watch the video after the jump]

Turning to Richards, Mitchell implored: "What can you or Planned Parenthood and other groups do to try to keep some of these clinics open?" Richards used the opportunity to proclaim: "Look, this is a very extreme set of bills that are going to close down dozens of health centers in Texas.... I think it's a growing theme, unfortunately, in many states where politicians are putting their own political agenda ahead of women's health care."

Mitchell followed up by ranting: "Well, we've seen action now in North Carolina. We saw what happened in the budget bill in Ohio. Also, Scott Walker, you know, in Wisconsin. So we're seeing state by state efforts through budget actions, often without hearings to roll back access to health care to women."

Speaking of the Texas legislation, which banned abortions after twenty weeks, Richards claimed: "...this bill was so extreme they couldn't get it through the regular legislature. They couldn't even get it through a special session. As you know, Senator Wendy Davis successfully filibustered that bill. So they brought the legislature back a third time simply to ram this bill through, even though it's not supported by the majority of Texans."

The assertion by Richards that Davis "successfully filibustered that bill" was untrue. Davis's filibuster failed to prevent a vote on the legislation, but a mob of rowdy abortion activists managed to delay final approval of the bill past a midnight deadline. In addition, the claim by Richards that the legislation was "not supported by the majority of Texans" flew in the face of a Texas Tribune poll that showed sixty-two percent of Texas residents support the bill.

Rather than challenge Richards on such points, Mitchell instead continued her effort to push the pro-choice agenda: "Now we should point out that there is very little support ? never has been ? for late-term abortions. It is a rarely used medical option. But this is not just about late-term abortions, this is about preventive health care and Planned Parenthood offering non-abortion services to women."

Touting the protestors who repeatedly stormed the Texas state house, Richards declared: "What we are seeing, which is very encouraging ? and I think you're showing some of the signs ? is this has enraged and engaged a whole new generation of young women and men who are absolutely not willing to go back to a time where women didn't have access to health care in America."

In response, Mitchell noted how Davis had become "a national figure overnight" after her filibuster, but fretted: "In Texas, your mother Ann Richards, I believe, was the last elected Democrat ? Democratic governor in 1990."

    Richards replied:

It's been a long time. But it was interesting, Andrea, to be at the capitol and to see literally thousands of people come back to the capitol day after day after day to testify against these bills. And many people said they hadn't seen anything like this since Ann Richards was elected governor. You know, she said when she ran for office that she wanted to open up government to the people of Texas and let them in. And I think thousands of people in Texas have taken her up on that offer in the last few weeks. It's been very encouraging to see democracy in action.

Mitchell remarked: "I can only imagine what she would be saying. I could hear her voice." Richards added: "I think we did." Mitchell agreed: "Exactly."

In a discussion with fellow journalists on the July 10 edition of the program, Mitchell similarly decried pro-life legislative success: "Texas isn't the only state where Roe v. Wade is being challenged....We've seen in Ohio, John Kasich and company sneaked it in to a budget bill....Wisconsin, there's an injunction against enforcement of what the legislature there did under Scott Walker."

    Story Continues Below Ad ?

?Here is a full transcript of the July 16 interview with Richards:

    1:47PM ET

ANDREA MITCHELL: On Friday, Texas became the 16th state to tighten regulations on abortion clinics in the past three years, effectively putting most of them out of business. This is part of a growing movement by states to restrict access to family planning and other women's health facilities. Joining me now is Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Cecile, thank you very much for being with us.

    CECILE RICHARDS: Sure.

MITCHELL: The Texas vote, I know it was filibustered, but then Rick Perry and the legislature, you know, pushed it through, so there's no appeal now. This is going to happen. What can you or Planned Parenthood and other groups do to try to keep some of these clinics open?

RICHARDS: Well, thanks for asking, Andrea. Look, this is a very extreme set of bills that are going to close down dozens of health centers in Texas. We are really looking at the constitutionality, we believe many aspects of the law probably are unconstitutional. But the thing that's really terrible about this, is it is coming on the heels of Governor Perry actually shutting down the women's health program in the state of Texas, where more than 100,000 women already lost access to preventive care. I think it's a growing theme, unfortunately, in many states where politicians are putting their own political agenda ahead of women's health care.

MITCHELL: Well, we've seen action now in North Carolina. We saw what happened in the budget bill in Ohio. Also, Scott Walker, you know, in Wisconsin. So we're seeing state by state efforts through budget actions, often without hearings...

    RICHARDS: Absolutely.

MITCHELL: ...to roll back access to health care to women.

RICHARDS: Right. I mean, that's what's incredible. And I mean, I just spent a lot of time in Texas ? it's my home state, of course ? where, in fact, they couldn't ? this bill was so extreme they couldn't get it through the regular legislature. They couldn't even get it through a special session. As you know, Senator Wendy Davis successfully filibustered that bill. So they brought the legislature back a third time simply to ram this bill through, even though it's not supported by the majority of Texans. And we're seeing the same thing in North Carolina, very unpopular moves by the legislature. Literally attaching anti-choice, anti-women's legislation to a motorcycle bill just in hopes of jamming it through the legislature there. But people do not support this, even in states like North Carolina and in Texas.

MITCHELL: Now we should point out that there is very little support ? never has been ? for late-term abortions. It is a rarely used medical option. But this is not just about late-term abortions, this is about preventive health care and Planned Parenthood offering non-abortion services to women.

RICHARDS: That's right. I mean, I think that, look, the rules ? the law that was just passed in Texas would literally close down dozens of women's health centers because of the ridiculous restrictions that are placed upon them and on doctors. I mean it is literally the legislature getting in between doctors and their ability to provide medical care. We're still seeing, in states where they're trying to cut women off of going to Planned Parenthood for basic family planning, cancer screening, that's ninety percent of what we do. So this is, I think, a much broader effort to take away women's access to care. What we are seeing, which is very encouraging ? and I think you're showing some of the signs ? is this has enraged and engaged a whole new generation of young women and men who are absolutely not willing to go back to a time where women didn't have access to health care in America.

MITCHELL: But that said, Wendy Davis became, you know, a national figure overnight over this. But in Texas, your mother Ann Richards, I believe, was the last elected Democrat ? Democratic governor in 1990. So there isn't-
    ?
RICHARDS: It's been a long time.

MITCHELL: I can only imagine what she would be saying. I could hear her voice.

    RICHARDS: I think we did.

MITCHELL: Exactly. Well, Cecile Richards, it's always great to see you. Thank you very much for the update.

    RICHARDS: Thanks a lot, Andrea.

MITCHELL: And we will stay on this story and we'll be right back.

New Android apps worth downloading: LibriVox Audio Books update, Control Center - iOS 7 Style, Tetris update

Catch up on the classics you've never read by skipping reading them with LibriVox, today's first app worth downloading. The free audiobook app brings you volunteer readings of classics, allowing you to listen to a huge catalog of books at no cost. If you're a closet iPhone fan, you might try Control Center ? iOS 7 Style, an app that can turn your Android user interface into something more like Apple's. And finally, we've got Tetris, which has received a big update to add social features, new graphics and music, and more.

LibriVox Audio BooksWhat?s it about? Tons of free, classic books have been converted to audiobooks and are available through LibriVox, and you can listen to them all with the service's app.

What?s cool? LibriVox is a largely volunteer effort to convert books in the public domain into audiobooks, with various readers recording the books that users can then download and listen to with the LibriVox app. The catalog of book is up to around 7,000 entries, and includes features like bookmarks to save important spots in a book's playback. LibriVox's new update adds a search function that helps you find similar works by the same or other authors, and a rating system that helps you find what you want to listen to next.

Who?s it for? If you like classic works of literature but would rather have them read to you than read them, LibriVox can help.

What?s it like? Check out Amazon's Audible app for an app that lets you pay for more contemporary ebooks.

Control Center - iOS 7 StyleWhat?s it about? Make your Android device feel more like an iPhone (if that's something you want) with the help of Control Center ? iOS 7 Style.

What?s cool? Despite there being similarities and differences, superior and inferior qualities on both sides of the smartphone divide, there are people who wish their iPhones were more like Android devices ? with their various freedoms of content control, for example ? and who wish their Android devices were more like iPhones. Control Center is an app that can help the second group of people, at least in terms of user interface and functionality controls. The app lets you make adjustments to the interface of your Android device to make it look more like an iPhone based on the iOS 7 operating system. You can tweak your home screen to look like Apple's app launcher, change the kind of notifications you receive to look more like Apple's and more.

Who?s it for? If you're an Android user but an Apple fan, Control Center gives you (some of) the best of both worlds.

What?s it like? For more cool user interface tweaks, check out the Star Trek: The Next Generation-inspired LCARS UI, and the (less Trek-related but still cool) Extended Controls.

    Tetris update (Free)

TetrisWhat?s it about? Classic puzzler Tetris has been re-released to the Google Play Store, bringing new social features to the block-dropping title

What?s cool? If you've ever played a video game, whether on your phone or otherwise, you're probably aware of Tetris. The title is a classic puzzle game that's incredibly simple, and yet devilishly challenging. Your job: guide blocks of varying sizes and shapes and drop them on the screen to interlock them together. Complete a line of blocks from one side of the screen to the other to clear it; leave gaps and the blocks pile up. Too many and you lose. Tetris just got a new release to the Google Play Store, replacing the old version with something a little newer that adds social features, so you can challenge Facebook friends, and that has fresh graphics and music as well.

Who?s it for? Fans of puzzle games shouldn't miss out on this classic example of the genre, especially if you have Facebook friends whom you'd like to take to Tetrimino school.

What?s it like? You might also check out the even more social Tetris Blitz, and popular puzzler Bejeweled 2.

Indian erotic drama B.A. Pass to screen at London Indian Film Festival

B.A. Pass star Shadab Kamal has said that he is grateful that the project has won praise on the international film festival circuit.

Following screenings at Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema, the Montreal World Film Festival and South Asian Film Festival in Paris, the project will screen this week at the London Indian Film Festival.

Kamal told Digital Spy: "I feel proud to say that not only has our film been selected for various prestigious festivals but it also picked up awards and got critical acclaim.

"We don't have a big star cast. For a small budget, non-commercial film made on an unconventional theme in mainstream Indian cinema, it helps to earn as much credibility as possible."

Also starring Chak De India actress Shilpa Shukla, the movie's theatrical release in India has been postponed in order to get wider distribution.

"The idea was to get as many shows as possible," revealed Kamal. "It seemed like a good move to postpone the release since we would be hard-pressed to fit in enough shows with a three-hour film like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag running at the same time.

"Add to that, there were many other films releasing on the same date."

Ashanti Omkar, Indian cinema editor for Cineworld cinemas, explained why the production was selected for screening: "The London Indian Film Festival has always looked at the cutting edge of films out of the subcontinent, with at least one very audacious choice in the lineup.

"This cougar tale by Ajay Bhal is one that is pre-selling really well already at the fourth LIFF festival, which is now the largest for Indian independent cinema in Europe. This is a rare chance to see such a film on the silver screen, which gives it quite an appeal for a summer festival."

The London Indian Film Festival runs from July 18 to July 25.

B.A. Pass releases in India on August 2.

Egypt: Islamist lawmakers demand Morsi's return

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist lawmakers in Egypt's disbanded upper house of parliament demanded Saturday the army reinstate ousted President Mohammed Morsi, and called on other legislatures around the world not to recognize the country's new military-backed leadership.

Morsi's supporters, including his Islamist allies, remain steadfast in their rejection of the military coup that toppled the president nearly two weeks ago after millions took to the street to demand his ouster. They have staged a series of mass protests in Cairo to push their demands, and are vowing to stay in the streets until he is returned to office.

Speaking at a mass rally staged by Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, the two dozen former parliamentarians, all Islamist members of the Shura Council that was dissolved by court order after the coup, accused the military of attempting to restore a "corrupt and dictatorial" regime.

The Brotherhood's website published a statement by the former lawmakers, in which they said the Shura Council's dissolution was invalid and claimed to have held a session at the rally.

Morsi was Egypt's first freely elected president, succeeding longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak who himself was toppled in 2011.

The military has brushed aside the Brotherhood's demands, while the new army-backed administration of interim President Adly Mansour has forged ahead with a swift timetable to amend the now suspended constitution, drafted under Morsi, and to hold parliamentary and presidential elections by early next year.

Local media have reported that a new Cabinet could be named next week. On Saturday, Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr submitted his resignation ahead of the expected shake-up.

While the presidency has floated offers of reconciliation with the Brotherhood, authorities are simultaneously clamping down on the group. So far, five of its top leaders have been arrested, and arrest warrants have been issued against the group's top leader and nine other Islamists. Islamist TV networks, meanwhile, have been shuttered.

Prosecutors on Saturday said they are looking into new complaints against Morsi, a number of Brotherhood leaders, including the group's Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie, and a number of their supporters. Spokesman for the prosecutor's office Adel al-Saeed said the complaints filed include collaborating with foreign bodies to harm national interests, the killing of peaceful protesters, possession of weapons and explosives, assaults on military barracks and damaging the state of the economy.

It was not immediately known who filed the complaints. State prosecutors investigate numerous complaints daily, and many do not result in charges being brought to court.

Prosecutors also continue to investigate allegations that Morsi and 30 other Brotherhood leaders escaped from prison in 2011 with help from the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Jailbreaks occurred amid the uprising that toppled Mubarak and led to the release of thousands of inmates.

Street violence has largely ceased since Monday's deadly clashes that left more than 50 Muslim Brotherhood supporters dead and hundreds wounded after they were holding a sit-in in front of Republican Guard forces club. The Brotherhood accuses the military of opening fire on protesters, while the army says Morsi supporters instigated the violence.

The Brotherhood has remained adamant in its opposition to the new political landscape, and shows no sign of backing down in its showdown with the military-backed interim leadership.

Mohammed el-Beltagy, a leading Brotherhood member and among those wanted by police, told thousands of the group's supporters overnight Friday that "for those who want reconciliation, our arms are open ... but those who want reconciliation do not fire bullets."

Morsi's supporters have pledged to keep protesting until the military meets their demands ? the reinstatement of Morsi, the Islamist-drafted constitution and the Islamist-dominated legislature ? and leading Brotherhood member Essam el-Arian called for another mass rally on Monday.

The deposed president's supporters have been holding a sit-in in front of the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque in eastern Cairo for two weeks. The rally has taken on a more permanent air, with tents going up as well as bathrooms being constructed behind brick walls to provide some privacy. Army soldiers stand guard from a relative distance, staking out positions about a kilometer (half-mile) away to try to avoid any direct confrontation.

On Friday, tens of thousands of Morsi supporters, many of them from provinces outside Cairo, turned out for a mass protest in front of the mosque, filling up the large intersection and spilling some ways down the boulevards. Witnesses said that military helicopters dropped leaflets on the crowd just before dawn encouraging them to leave the sit-in.

"The measures which have been taken were not targeting you and were not meant to belittle your role and your status," the leaflets said. "We assure to you that there will be no manhunt for those who want to end the sit-in and return to his home."

It also warned them not to approach nearby military buildings.

The Brotherhood responded to the flyers, saying that "the leaders of the coup are not keen on the stability of Egypt" and questioned the military's promise not to go after protesters.

"Egyptian people are not naive and cannot be bitten twice," the group said in a statement.

Ribeiro joins Phoenix Coyotes to reunite with former coach

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Mike Ribeiro had every intention of returning to Washington after one point-a-game season with the Capitals.

When it became clear the Capitals could no longer afford him, the highly-skilled centre had one place in mind: Phoenix, where he could reunite with former coach Dave Tippett.

?I wanted to be coached by someone I knew and someone I had a good relationship with,? Ribeiro said. ?I?ve always had good coaches, but to have someone I could talk to and comfortable with, that was important to me.?

The Coyotes have been searching for a top-line centre seemingly since they moved to the desert in 1996 and had been hampered by the lack of an owner the past four years.

Its ownership situation close to being resolved, Phoenix finally had the financial flexibility to lure big-name players to the desert. During free agency, the Coyotes landed one of the biggest by signing Ribeiro to a four-year, $22 million deal.

A fast centre who has great skill with the puck, Ribeiro gives the Coyotes an immediate upgrade up front, someone who can create scoring chances for himself and his wings, along with giving them a much-needed boost on the power play.

Ribeiro has been a consistent scorer during his 14-year career, topping 50 points in a season eight times, including 49 ? 36 of those assists? in 48 games with Washington last season. He also was the NHL?s top power-player scorer last season and joins a team that was among the league?s worst with a man advantage.

?If you look at our off-season checklist and if you have 10 of them, the No. 1 thing on our list was finding a creative offensive centre that can help our power play,? Coyotes general manager Don Maloney said. ?That?s been No. 1 for me for three or four years and to be able to land Mike Ribeiro (is great).?

Ribeiro came into the league and put together a couple of big seasons with Montreal before landing in Dallas.

Four years with Tippett helped turn Ribeiro into more than just a scorer, rounding him into a two-way player who could be on the ice in any situation, whether it was the power play, penalty kill or in key defensive situations.

?To be a top player, you have to be able to play in all situations and that?s one of the things in the four years in Dallas, he continued to expand those roles,? Tippett said. ?He understands to win, you have to play well defensively, but he also understands his role that he has to create offensively, so he?s a good all-around player and I think will be a real good fit for us.?

Tippett was the tipping point for Ribeiro when he went searching for a new team.

Straightforward and even-keeled, Tippett has been known as a players? coach, whether it was in Dallas or Phoenix. Ribeiro had a great relationship with Tippett when they were together in Dallas and once the Capitals decided to go a different direction, he knew the coach he wanted to play for next.

?He knows what I can do and maybe lets me freely do more stuff offensively, but at the same time be a good defensive player, too,? Ribeiro said. ?I think I learned a lot from it (the time with Tippett). He?s not a coach who?s going to scream at you, more talking to you down to earth. That?s why guys like him so much. He?s normal, he respects you. That was a big part of me being comfortable on the ice.?

But to feel comfortable with the Coyotes, it was going to take more than just Tippett for Ribeiro to play for them.

Since former owner Jerry Moyes took the team into bankruptcy, the Coyotes have been operated by the NHL, limiting their ability to lure top players because of financial restraints, but also because players were reluctant to a join a team that had an uncertain future.

A few days before the start of the free agency period, the Glendale City Council approved an arena lease agreement with Renaissance Sports and Entertainment, clearing the last hurdle toward the group completing its purchase the team.

That was enough to convince Ribeiro to play for the Coyotes.

Yum China sales declines moderate, rebounding from bird flu scare

    By Lisa Baertlein

(Reuters) - KFC parent Yum Brands Inc on Wednesday reported a smaller than expected decline in June sales at established restaurants in China, showing signs of recovery after sales were drastically hit by the country's bird flu outbreak.

The company posted an estimated 10 percent drop in June sales - a smaller decline than in May when sales began to moderate. June results from China, the company's most important business unit, will be recorded in the current third quarter.

The sales decline in June was less than the 12.2 percent fall expected on average of 20 analyst estimates compiled by Consensus Metrix. The fast-food operator gets more than half of its overall sales in China, where most of its nearly 5,300 restaurants are KFCs.

In May, Yum's China sales fell an estimated 19 percent.

"China sales are recovering as expected. The extensive media surrounding Avian flu in China has subsided and same-store sales at KFC are clearly improving," Chief Executive David Novak said in a statement.

"As KFC sales continue to recover, we expect to have solid momentum in China heading into 2014," Novak said.

Shares of Yum were up 0.5 percent in extended trade at $72.75 after closing at $72.36 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Yum earned $281 million, or 61 cents per share, for the second quarter - down from $331 million, or 69 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding items, second-quarter earnings were 56 cents per share, 2 cents better than the average analyst estimate compiled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

While the official end to the fast-food chain's overall quarter was June 15, Yum's China quarter ended on May 31.

Yum reiterated its prior forecast for a mid-single-digit, full-year decline in earnings per share. The company, whose other fast-food chains include Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, expects China restaurant sales to be positive in the fourth quarter.
