Congress takes first hard look at Sandy damage

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress on Thursday took its first hard look at the damage from Superstorm Sandy amid appeals for tens of billions of dollars in additional disaster assistance to rebuild from one of the most destructive storms ever to hit the Northeast.

Testifying before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, lawmakers from states incurring the most damages painted a painted a grim picture of destruction from the late October storm that left 131 people dead.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, one of the hardest-hit states, said more than 300,000 homes were seriously damaged from New York City to the eastern tip of Long Island alone. He said more than 20 million square feet of commercial offices are still closed.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., cited Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates that nearly 72,000 buildings were damaged in New Jersey, which was also hard hit by the storm. He said along the battered coast, storm surges destroyed neighborhoods, ruined businesses, and displaced families.

"Imagine seeing your home or small business ? which represented your dreams and aspirations ? reduced to a pile of rubble," Lautenberg said. "Imagine having to evacuate, and coming home to find nothing there. The place where you raised your children and created so many memories ? gone. This is the reality for far too many New Jerseyans."

Rep. Bill Pascrell, D-N.J., said a storm surge flooded the Passaic Valley treatment plant, shutting down the system that handles sewage from 1.5 million customers in northern New Jersey. New Jersey Transit, which has a daily ridership of nearly 1 million people, suffered flooded tunnels and crippled hubs. He said PSEG, the state's largest utility, had more than $100 million in damage to its infrastructure.

In Connecticut, Sen. Richard Blumenthal said nearly a third of at least 3,000 homes are uninhabitable.

Congress, facing tight budget constraints with the fiscal cliff budget talks, seems to be in no mood to move quickly to approve additional spending.

Easy Self Help Solutions That Really Work! - Empower Network

Self improvement, including positive thinking techniques, can really help you live a better life. This article includes some suggestions to help you begin a journey of self improvement, have you thinking differently, and improve your quality of life.

If you take care of your health you will be able to get the most out of your self improvement. Always keep a healthy routine that includes exercise, diet, and sleep in order to be successful. Although this is simple advice, it is perhaps one of the hardest things that we can master.

One great self improvement goal you can set is to practice being more selfless. It might be hard at first, but do your best to make sacrifices and help others. You will soon become the person you envision for yourself, when you have mastered the ability to personally sacrifice without harming your own well-being.

Ask yourself whether excessive drinking is a major contributing factor in your life. Do you use tobacco products or any other harmful things? Your body should be treated with the respect it deserves. Kicking your worst habits is a large part of becoming a happier and more healthy individual. Look at your life, what you are doing that may be harmful, and work on omitting things that need to be removed from your life.

It is important that you feel comfortable using the abilities that you have. Everyone has unique individual skills which is what makes our planet diverse. Don?t fret on the things you haven?t mastered yet; rather focus on the positive attributes you possess.

You need to be your highest priority since you can?t please everybody. You are essentially responsible for your happiness; however, this don?t mean you should use people to get what you want. Being sure to stay true to yourself can really enhance your path to self improvement.

Tell other people positive things. Instead, show kindness and compassion for others and you will see how much better you will feel about yourself.

Select one important part of yourself that you would like to improve, and focus on that. There may be multiple things that you would like to improve about yourself, but by limiting your focus to one item at a time, you improve your chances for success. In addition, this enables you to make slow and gradual changes to your actions, perceptions and behaviors, increasing the likelihood that these new concepts will eventually become second nature.

If you are looking to achieve success in your life, start by studying those who have already attained great success. Then, intertwine some of their habits into your own success plan. Begin by changing a few easy things, and work on them until it is second nature. Persevere in developing good habits, realizing that they come in time. Many people accept the adage that habits are engrained within you in as little as 21 days.

Try to maximize your work time and get more work done. A good method to work for long periods of time is to take frequent breaks. Taking constant breaks, while appearing counterproductive, can allow you time to relax so that you can return to work and get more done.

Slow down and count to ten in your head before you speak in anger. Take a cleansing breath and focus on something positive. Stay grounded and only say something you can live with tomorrow.

This article offers information on how you can better you personality, mental outlook and character to live a happier life. Following these simple tips can get you started on self improvement, changing yourself for the better, and living a new life.

Leveson?s light proposals were a political gift for Cameron. He didn?t take it

Very few industries welcome new regulation. Fast food retailers aren?t vocal in screaming for a ?fat tax?. Booze manufacturers don?t want a minimum price for alcohol. Energy generators don?t generally want strong renewable obligations. When new regulations are proposed then the industry interest resorts to apocalyptic rhetoric that often refers to: (a) North Korea and China; (b) George Orwell; and/or (c) Adolf Hitler. So far, so obvious. So this week?s broad press reaction to the possibility of the creation of [...]

    The EU Budget explained

We are hearing a lot at the moment about the EU Budget and the wrangling?surrounding it.? I thought it would be a good time to write a blog about what the EU Budget actually is and what could happen if no agreement is reached. There are two different budgets in the European Union; one is the annual budget which sets spending levels each year.? The next, and the one causing the current controversy, is the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), which [...]

Of course we should give 16 year olds the vote

There are several claims made for votes at 16 which are decidedly spurious. I don?t believe ? for example ? that giving 16 year olds the vote will increase participation. If anything, it could mean that while more people vote, a smaller percentage of the increased electorate do so. I equally don?t believe it?s fair to recite the ?no taxation without representation? argument. For a start, some 16 year olds earn (and pay income tax) and some do not, but [...]
